1980 Chevrolet Truck custom deluxe review from North America
"Old Chevy Trucks Never Die"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced front brake pads as soon as I got it home (the brakes were completely worn out).
Replaced rear brake shoes at the same time.
Replaced the spark plugs, shocks, steering stabilizer, air filter, changed the oil and filter at the same time as I did the brake work.
Replaced a few light bulbs and fuses.
Had new mud terrain tires mounted on new wheels.
Had entire exhaust system replaced.
Had new clutch installed.
General comments?
I received this pickup truck as a trade for my Jeep cj-5. I had old Jeep that was drive-able, but, needed a lot of work. I was tired of my Jeep project and wanted to just get rid of it. I traded the jeep for this truck And so far the truck is great.
When I traded I knew it needed a clutch. As far the exhaust work I enjoy hearing the engine rumble so I had dual exhaust pipes added with glass-pack mufflers and it sounds great. Sometimes I think the only thing that keeps me sane is listening to that Chevy V-8 rumbling its way though town on my drive home.
The truck runs great. I have had no problems with it starting even in these cold winter days.
The 4 speed transmission shifts just fine. The 4x4 system in it works flawlessly.
It is still an old truck and won't let me forget that when I drive.
The front-end wanders slightly at highway speeds.
The heaters and defrosters work great for 23 year old truck. Compared
to my '98 Dodge Ram they are slow to get their job done.
For a truck that has over 140,000 miles and is going to 24 years old in a few weeks it is great truck. It has few quirks about it (the drivers side door has to be slammed to close right, sometimes the carb will flood, it rides a little rough, the steering wanders a little, the weatherstripping where the doors meet the cab have a lot of wind whistles).
For an old pickup truck it is a great machine. I do enjoy driving it. Plenty of good old fashion V-8 muscle.
4x4 traction in winter is excellent.
8 foot long bed for practicality with a half ton capacity.
I will be keeping this Chevy truck a long time. They are just good trucks.
