1988 Audi 100 EE 2.2 petrol

Summary:

Good design, very well built

Faults:

Ignition switch broke at 165,000 km.

The hood lining has detached in places.

I replaced the water pump at 200,000 km.

Both front suspension inserts renewed at 221,000 km.

The steering rack has started to leak a little.

General Comments:

I find this car a pleasure to drive, even after owning it five years.

It appears to be very well put together, as it is still rattle free.

Fuel economy is not great when city motoring, however, highway is exceptional for a car its size.

The three stage transmission really kills the engine's performance.

The lumbar support is poor on the front seats.

Equipment levels on the EE model are very high.

Car a little too heavy for town.

1987 Audi 100 CD 2.2 5 Cylinder

Summary:

Built for high mileages

Faults:

The windshield wiper mechanism is shot. To be fixed. Broken door handle on right rear door. Engine is distinctly tired now, but still runs smoothly and reliably.

General Comments:

This car was purchased in the knowledge that it had a very limited life left. An A 2 B work hack basically. Has since surprised and delighted me with its comfort, reliability, and good build quality, never expected to be capable of reliable intercity trips, it's now regularly pressed into service, as it is a great long distance vehicle, and feels reliable. Body is totally rust free as the vehicle is fully galvanized and wax injected chassis.

Half a million kilometres?? Mate, that is Toyota mileage combined with Audi comfort and style. As the owner of a 2.3 5cyl 90 this is very heartening to me. Nice one.

1994 Audi 100 E 2.6 V6 petrol

Summary:

High quality, good value luxury car

Faults:

Ignition switch needed replacing.

Gear position indicator in the dashboard - light bulb blown, haven't replaced as this is apparently quite a complicated job.

Required 2 new oxygen sensors to rectify a stalling fault. Car would stall for no apparent reason when revs dropped to idle, for example slowing to stop at lights, breaking to turn a slow corner in town - have heard of this happening on other people's cars.

General Comments:

Underrated luxury car with all the standard equipment that you would expect; excellent high speed, long distance cruiser with superb build quality.

A bit slow off the mark; V6 requires a firm boot to move the relatively heavy body from rest, however once the revs are up it accelerates strongly.

Good handling for a large car, absence of adjustable steering wheel on this type of car is very strange.

1994 Audi 100 E 2.8 V6 petrol

Summary:

Affordable luxury motoring

Faults:

This is our first car and we've only had it 2 months.

In the first fortnight the automatic shift selector light failed. When we picked it up from the service centre a connector rod (?) failed and we only had the first three (3) gears available.

A week later the head gasket blew! Apparently the cause was the failure of the thermostat switch to turn on, causing the cooling system to fail and cooked the engine.

The car's been in the shop nearly 2 1/2 weeks now and is due to be picked up tomorrow. Approximately $1500 parts, machining & labour (includes new valves) free under warranty. And they've given me a loan car!

We are the 2nd owners and bought this car from the original dealer (it was a trade in, trade up). It has a complete service history and these are the first problems this car has experienced. Now that really is bad luck!!!

General Comments:

We've had some bad luck, but the car itself is outstanding (when it's going). Leather trim, electrics, power seats, Blaupunkt stereo, 10 stack CD changer, climate control. The original owner lost $90.000 in the depreciation of this car in 5 years. The auto trans is sluggish off the mark, unless you apply throttle, then it moves quite respectably (and then some!). At speed on the highway it moves quickly and effortlessly. This car will happily drive at 160 kms all day if required, probably everyday. It is very comfortable, strong and safe. The perfect family sedan.
