1984 BMW 5 Series 520i 2.0

Summary:

Great car for its price. Look after it, and it will go on!

Faults:

The car is in great condition with full service history, electric fuel pump makes a never ending buzzing noise, have been told that eventually will need to replace but it will get a lot louder before its needed. The radio still drowns it out in the front.

95 kph and upwards it gets the meanest shakes (driving under this). It's a dream and feels like a great cruising car.

Runs on premium unleaded. Or adding the additive; same price in the end. I'm lazy so just use premium.

Her name is Daisy cause if you don't drive her right she lets you know. Changing gears at the wrong time will leave the person behind you in a small cloud of light grey smoke.

Drivers seat is worn and it seems most 5 series are of this year, but it is still not bad to sit on after you get used to the springs in your ass.

Heater doesn't work. Could be very simple, haven't had it checked, will get it going for summer when it's very useful.

General Comments:

Fantastic car to drive, fuel is pretty good, I forget when I fill it up around 2-3 weeks BTW fills. Driven everyday.

I enjoy her drug dealing look and dark shark front.

I have not had any problems starting her in the morning, first time every time.

Big boot.

She can move if you want to push it. Can leave it in 2 and 3 gear till you're on 100kmph and then the overdrive in 5 makes fuel not so much of a problem.

Handling is OK; for her age this car is a rock. I don't see any reason to get a new one. I don't think she will ever stop. Battle on little Beemer!

1984 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.8L Six

Summary:

Exceeded my expectations, will be with me for a long time

Faults:

Only issues;

Tailshaft center support bearing "clunking" due to being loose; easy to fix.

Bonnet gas struts shot.

General Comments:

Bought this as a daily driver to keep my heavily modified Volvo 740 Turbo safely out of traffic.

The BMW's seats aren't quite as comfy as the 740s, but they're not that bad at all. Much better than an equivalent Australian car's seats.

Having said that, everything else about the car is perfect; starts instantly, is smooth as silk even when cold, has plenty of torque for loping around town & in traffic, the interior is absolutely gorgeous - I couldn't be happier with my choice.

What really surprised my is the amount of power in the engine once the revs pass the 3500rpm mark. Definitely exceeded my expectations - doesn't use as much fuel as expected either, so I'm happy.

Love the simple engineering, it's just like working on a 1980s Volvo but with a little less space in the engine bay.

Overall, great stuff; but I don't think I'd recommend one to a person who doesn't take care of machinery properly. A perfect car for anyone who loves old European cars and wants a nice slusher to cruise around in, and is ready & able to do by-the-book maintenance.
