1986 BMW 6 Series 635 CSI Alpina 3.5 petrol

Summary:

The best car I have ever owned. And still own

Faults:

Totally nothing. Always starts first time and never failed a WOF.

General Comments:

This car is now 29 years old. Always starts first time. Never fails a warrant. Uses a lot of petrol, but always a reliable old classic.

So comfortable to drive with the original Recaro leather seats.

Looks really sharp. Original Alpina wheels and accessories. Still not one stone chip on the paint.

At the rate you drive the car (about 1300 km/year - I drive that distance routinely in a month), I'd be horrified if you failed the WOF, since there is nothing to wear out.

1986 BMW 6 Series CSi 3.5 litre petrol

Summary:

Great to look at, but even better to drive

Faults:

The vehicle was originally auto and made into a manual. Tail-shaft was a Frankenstein made from an auto - replaced with a proper manual shaft.

Driver's side seat has a broken hoop and will require fixing.

General Comments:

The car was bought in November 2012, and driven 9,900km to its new home and didn't miss a beat.

European air-conditioning handled the Australian heat well.

Fuel consumption averaged 9L/100km - ~ 30MPG.

Excellent handling, comfortable ride with some days covering 1,000km plus per day, and at the end of day, I had no back pain.

Unknown what the top speed is, except it's higher than 210kph.

1980 BMW 6 Series 635CSi Euro British M30 Engine 3.5 litre

Summary:

Love it

Faults:

Bought as a weekender project car.

Have replaced entire suspension, lowered 1 1/2 inches.

Complete brake rebuild and overhaul of brake lines.

Rust removed from floor pan drivers side, rear right hand guard, front bumper.

Steering box collapsed 2nd day of ownership. Complete steering rebuild.

Driver's seat needs replacing. Front passenger seat looking tired.

Has had the paintwork touched up by the previous owner.

Boot needs re trim.

General Comments:

Absolutely love driving the car when it's not being repaired.

2/3 thirds complete from being restored to as it came off the assembly line. Have found some parts hard to obtain.

Handles like a new car. Loves a drink when pushed.

General feedback from other people is positive, and the car is a bit of a rarity in my area.

1978 BMW 6 Series CSi 3.5 litre 6 cylinder petrol

Summary:

Subtle, stylish, well-made, well-combined

Faults:

Headlight wipers never worked; central locking problems; water pump; old plastic bits that fall off; air conditioner needed re-gas; had to replace corroded cylinder head, rear universal joint (which involved a tail shaft rebuild), drive shaft centre bearing, suspension ball joints, and muffler. The engine is starting to use oil, but has good compression. I've also had the power steering hose burst, spraying the exhaust with oil.

BMW dashboards don't handle Australian ultra-violet rays very well, but removing and replacing the dash involves removing the windscreen, so it won't be done for a while.

A particular fault of this model BMW (this one is chassis #24; my previous one was chassis #191 of the RHD cars) is the brake boosters. I had to get them overhauled on both cars. They now have Australian PBR innards. Cost over $1000 each time.

General Comments:

My previous BMW 635 was pretty well thrashed when I bought it and in driving it from Canberra to Brisbane, it went well, but used 4 litres of oil. I'd no sooner got home than it developed an intermittent computer fault and was off the road for 2 months.

It also had body faults as a legacy of several indifferent owners.

I sold it at a loss to get my present 635 because I was impressed with it despite its shortcomings. The owner of my new car was selling at a loss too, so it sort of balanced out. The new car had a much better history than the other, in particular an owner who had owned it for 14 years and loved it. It had replaced his Porsche 911 Carrera.

It's a subtle car, needing a lot of stirring of the dogleg gearbox to make it go. It thrives on revs, but can be driven sedately. Its subtlety extends to its looks (it is pale metallic green), and as I'm not a show-off, it suits me. It is comfortable, an excellent long-distance cruiser (2 adults, 2 teenagers and luggage for 900 miles in an easy 13 hours, once) and only excessive on petrol if worked hard.

If it is worked hard, the response is very business-like. The engine adopts a purposeful note, the gearbox brings on the power at just the right level, the body squats and hugs. The only time it is scary is in the wet, but that just might be those hard old Michelins.

The only faults it now has, apart from the cost of TRX tyres, are age-related. After all, it is probably one of the oldest in the world.

There's nothing about it I really dislike. Barring human error, I'm sure, with careful maintenance, and commensurate driving, it'll be with me for a long time yet.

1985 BMW 6 Series 628 CSi petrol

Summary:

A classy motorcar that still turns heads!

Faults:

Ignition lock jammed.

Brake bomb died.

General Comments:

Very stylish machine - I was a little worried after the quickness of the Lancia but I was not disappointed - The silver shark flies!

The back seats are beautiful (bucket - leather), but very little leg room.

1980 BMW 6 Series 635 CSi 3.5 6 cylinder

Summary:

Fast, fat and furious

Faults:

Split power steering hose.

Clutch bearing.

General Comments:

The most beautiful car I've driven. Much more poke than the current 850 up to 100kmh and still got the looks to go with it.

Superb rear end action, slides round the corners magnificently. Only drawback is it goes like a V8, but also drinks like a V8.

I own one of these in Malaysia. Beautiful is one word to describe it. Passion is something you need to maintain it. And most of all, stay committed to the car because you're not going to find that many cars which can fit this description!!
