1978 Ford Cortina TE Ghia 4.1 Lt 250 X-flow, 4speed , with hot cam

Summary:

Absolute beast

Faults:

Radiator blew at about 290,000 km.

Then the alternator died at 292,000 km.

And now it's only running off of 5 cylinders.

General Comments:

The power to weight ratio in my car is awesome, so she goes like the clappers.

It has really good handling at high speeds around corners and on straight roads.

And it does really good burnouts.

Summary:

An untapped source of potential

Faults:

So far I've blown the water pump seal.

Also the points have given out so there is no spark for the engine to kick over.

The body isn't that great on it either because it has sat in a paddock for 15 years.

But I've only found one rust patch, it's under the vinyl roof it is about the size of a 50 cent piece.

General Comments:

I've been told before that these cortina's are a very quick, but I didn't know how much power they had until I bought one.

They are a lot smaller than my previous cars, but that doesn't worry me because it's very close to being the quickest six cylinder in my town.

Summary:

The best power to price ratio available

Faults:

I had to replace the clutch soon after purchasing the vehicle.

A new set of brakes were needed through out the car.

The cars are very high and must require lowering to gain more street credit.

General Comments:

Well the Cortinas are very cheap for what they are.

Sound system wise they are perfect with a nice sealed chamber trapping in the sound.

Stock tacho beatiful.

I can't get over how nice the gearing is once you get used to the beast.

I have fallen I love with Cortinas and will always have a place for them in my heart.

1978 Ford Cortina TE GL 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Ideal first car

Faults:

Gear selector stick assembly kept popping out of the gearbox.

Power brake assembly needed replacing/repairing soon after purchase.

Bad rust in the boot area, and the sills (not too bad anywhere else though).

The car was really only running on three cylinders when I bought it (rings shot) and as a result the car was burning oil like Saddam Hussein... (well, like one litre every month). I never fixed the problem.

The car usually leaked coolant, but I wasn't sure where from.

General Comments:

This car is not a bad performer for a 4 popper. I could get the car up to 160 km/h. I recommend the 4 speed manual version, as the automatics on these old cars were quite 'sloppy' (slow).

Parts are plentiful, and if you look in the right places, quite cheap (even now, for a vintage car!).

It makes a good first car, and not too bad on petrol. Nice to go on long drives in.

The automatics are not slow. I have a auto Cortina and it drives harder then any new 6 I have ever driven.. if you put your foot down, it's going to pull you back in your seat. Mine spins off the line, so they can't be too SLOPPY.

Hard to get a good one, but worth it

Faults:

My gearbox was totally stuffed when I got it. Very hard to find good second hand box.

General Comments:

This moves! with the standard 4.1L it can get to 170km/h just over 14 seconds. Drives harder than any car I've been in. Never lost a race!
