1980 Ford Escort RS 2000 2lt Pinto

Summary:

Unique looking 70s classic

Faults:

The clutch release bearing seized, battery died.

General Comments:

Nice 70s classic, has a sporty feel for it's age and has been very faithful to me from the day I got it. Car was well maintained by previous owner.

1979 Ford Escort 1.6 GL mk2 1.6

Summary:

For $600 off a elderly couple, it's a bargain and a half

Faults:

General rust all through the car, especially in the boot where the water has been running down the back windows and into the boot (the seal could be gone). There are other rust markings on the car where the previous owner has tried to patch them up, didn't do a bad job with it, and the body work still looks OK.

Engine seems fine, the car was owned by an elderly couple with a family for its entire life.

The front seats are wearing, as well as the seat-belts.

The carpets in the front have been cut out since I got the car, due to my feet slipping when driving.

General Comments:

They are not the most roomy cars, the driver's seat is so far forward, but it might work well this way, because it doesn't seem to bother me too much while driving.

The back seems pretty comfy, so my friends should be happy, but I don't really care, cos I'll be driving. Hope it's comfy for the ladies as well.

I think twin black racing strikes and a spoiler would complete the look of this mean yellow racer.

I'm pretty happy with it, seeing as it's my first car. Hopefully she holds out for a few years more, and maybe she'll get a bit of work done to her.

1980 Ford Escort L 1.3 petrol

Summary:

A faithful workhorse just about ready to retire

Faults:

When I got the car the two speed heater fan sometimes made a nasty noise like fingernails down a blackboard.

After a cold season that meant the heater fan was used quite a bit, it made the noise more often, and finally the fan failed completely. The heater works, but without the fan won't really demist the windows unless I drive really fast.

Lots of things don't work - temperature gauge, oil warning light, clock.

Front seat came off the floor, but another seat was easy to come by.

After a while a spring popped up from the front passenger seat and stabbed my friend in the bottom.

General Comments:

For a car that's done nearly 300000km this is pretty impressive. The engine is reconditioned, but still leaks oil so fast there's a massive patch of oil on the road outside my house.

This was a driving school car for its first ten years, so it won't have been treated all that well. But some things still work - two bars of the rear window de-mister still work.

It's economical and reliable.

The paint is fading very baldly, but it has done a lot of kms.

Since the heater fan doesn't work, and we get cold icy winters, I've got a more modern car that can demist. It's just about at the end of its life, but it's been a long life. There's no rust and it still goes, so someone will want it. A good car after all it's been through.

1980 Ford Escort GL 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A fun car to drive and also a piece of rally racing history

Faults:

Dashboard has begun to crack.

Minor oil leak.

Seats have been worn badly.

Electrics to the heater needed to be replaced.

Small amount of rust formed to the boot lid.

General Comments:

This car is a sleeper. Its a pocket rocket waiting to happen in the right hands.

Clutch is relatively light and gear changes are seamless.

The 1.6 litre engine pumping about 44kw of power allows brisk acceleration in peak hour traffic.

With that said, the back end may get a bit swirly when in loose terrain (I.e. A gravel driveway)

Steering seems heavy for a car that weighs less the 1000kg.

I fully agree! I own a 1600 Mk2 GL. Easy on fuel, gets looks when you drive it around, and my god, in the rain or gravel it's all over the show!! Tremendous fun! :)
