1975 Ford F250 4x4 300

Summary:

Feels right

Faults:

Replaced fuel pump with elec, but re-fitted it after finding a gasket in the fuel tank was the culprit, blocking pickup.

Replaced the headlights with flat bright ones.

Power steering pump was out of line; fitted with one from a Bronco. No F Series to 80 had power steering here..

No brake adjusters on the rear.

General Comments:

Best truck built, ease of repair, easy to work on, heaps of interchangeable parts.

It can pull, tow and carry anything.

Somebody should import more older trucks to Australia. Pre. 80 Rangers, 250 4x4, 350 4x4 live (solid) front axle, not i.f.s. crap.

2003 Ford F250 XLT 7.3 turbo diesel

Summary:

Perfect tow machine

Faults:

Very susceptible to algae in diesel fuel. This requires removal of fuel tank to clean filters in the tank.

General interior build quality is usual Ford and is a litlle cheap.

General Comments:

Plenty of power though. Only stopped by its bulk.

2000 Ford F250 XL 4.2 turbo

Summary:

An overpriced heap of junk

Faults:

From the point I got it the brake system has not been the best. There was only a half a pedal there.

The clutch cylinders were leaking after 10 000 km.

The bull bar and tow bar has been cheaply put together. I ended up fixing it myself.

After 20 000 km I had to replace the coolant system.

I just hasn't had the power I expected it to have.

General Comments:

After all that money I spent on it it hasn't re payed me anything.

I'd rather have my old Toyota.

I don't know how you could possibly expect a 4.2 litre diesel engine to feel "powerful" in a 2.5 tonne truck. The 7.3 and 6.0l PowerStroke diesels have a proven track record, almost double the power of the 4.2 and are considered to be very reliable. I have not owned one, but from all the owners I have spoken to with the high capacity diesel engines they are all very pleased with their trucks. I assume this is the case with the 900,000+ Americans who buy new F-series each year also.
