1996 Ford Fairmont EF II Wagon 4.0

Summary:

It just never let me down, ever!

Faults:

Usual, starter motor, aircon gas, radiator, ball joints, mufflers, rotors/pads and a head gasket, but I have owned this car for 16 years and at times put it to the test.

General Comments:

Just an amazing car considering; I towed a tandem car trailer with a kids cubby house on it with a total weight of around 2 tonne on a 38 degree Celsius day in December from Cheltenham to Belgrave using Heatherton rd (extreme hills for those unfamiliar), and it never moved from its normal temp or laboured up the hills. Sometimes I wonder why I have to let it go, but like my 3 ex wives I guess it too has become redundant and is being replaced with a younger model. Seriously though, 284000+ km and it still performs.

1996 Ford Fairmont EF2 Series 2 Sedan 4.0

Summary:

Great car, buy one now in good condition, the price is low, however just like every previous Falcon

Faults:

Had the head gasket replaced.

New headlights as the old ones went yellow.

Replaced the shockers with Bilstein Sports, 32mm front anti sway bar, Nolathane bushing, caster camber kit.

18s all round with performance tyres, handles very sharp and has surprised a lot of hot hatches.

Replaced the discs to slotted front and back, performance pads.

Replaced exhaust, just the standard one had rusted out through lack of use.

General Comments:

Bloody god car, has never let me down.

Fuel can be a little thirsty if driven in a sporty fashion.

Unbreakable engine. If the car is serviced correctly, it will last for hundreds of thousands of km.

Set up properly handles, and it performs well above expectation.

Brakes could be better; I have an XR6, BF2 Cobra GT as well; not up to that level. I do have to remind myself that it started as basic family car.

1996 Ford Fairmont EF Series II 4.0L

Summary:

Love it, love it, love it

Faults:

Radiator hose split, resulting in the motor overheating and blowing a head gasket... got a replacement EF put in and all good, except for the oil pressure sensor... yet to be remedied.

General wear and tear has resulted in warranty failures every time now... rack ends, tie rod ends, exhaust replaced. Also window regulators in both front doors now replaced, and also replacing radiator and getting a bigger trans oil cooler put in, as this is my tow car for my horse float. I'm expecting the bearings to be the next thing to need fixing... and god damn it... I spilled coffee all over the electric window switch, which caused it to short out, so I have to replace that too now... but I still love this car!!!

General Comments:

A rock solid, steady reliable car with just enough grunt when you need it, especially overtaking.

Comfortable and quiet.

Heaps of room, and I love how the back seats are designed to fold down for extra space... great for the DIYer!!

1996 Ford Fairmont EF 4.0 litre petrol

Summary:

Such a comfortable, roomy, effortless drive

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Haven't owned it for long, but the Ford Fairmont is very comfortable.

Interior room is awesome.

Cruise control nice.

Quiet ride.

Plenty of smooth power.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how economical the 4.0 litre engine is.

1996 Ford Fairmont EF 4.0L straight six

Summary:

This car is for the serious young driver

Faults:

There are not many things that I can say that have gone wrong with my EF. It is a good car, strong engine and transmission. The only thing that has gone wrong is the power steering pump leaked a lot, but was easy fixed with a new high pressure line.

General Comments:

It has a great body with good seats, excellent driving feel, even though the brakes squeak a little. This is an excellent second car, and when compared to my first car, a 92 Commodore, it gets excellent fuel economy.

On the highway gets off to an easy 110ks and sits well on the road. The only thing I can tell that is bad is it has a tendency to lose traction through larger roundabouts, and likes to let its back end out.
