1983 Ford Falcon XE straight 6

Summary:

A real cracker, cheap and long lasting

Faults:

Water pump packed it in after 210,000km, not too bad for the original equipment.

Air conditioner needed to be changed over from the freon system and regassed, it made the A/C work much better.

Needs leaded petrol...booooo.

General Comments:

The car runs a treat, has plenty of power for the 6 cylinder and has never failed to start.

Gets heaps of looks as it's bright red, smart black interior, and fats on nice stock slotted chrome wheels.

Solid as a stone on the road, and comfy for those longer road trips to S.A. from QLD.

1983 Ford Falcon Panel Van 351

Summary:

From Crap Box to Sheer Power

Faults:

Coil lead came off when I had the 4.1 alloy head engine in it.

Radiator overflow leaked and it started to rust.

General Comments:

Purchased the car as a standard white panel van with a 4.1 engine in it for 800 dollars.

The engine was worn badly as was the body work, I decided to give it a total overhaul, I had the suspension lowered, then resprayed it in dark blue 2pack, spent 5000 dollars on a 351 I had given to me so I put that in, I also refitted the inside of the car in a nice grey.

It is in show car condition now, I have trouble getting grip taking off from the traffic lights its that powerful.

But since the re-fit, the car has been like a dream, hugs the road and hasn't had a mechanical fault since.

I drive from Adelaide to Mt Gambier twice a week and It purrs at 210km/h quite comfortably at 4500rpm.

I was offered 15000 dollars to sell it, Not bad considering It owes me 12800, but I will never sell it.

1983 Ford Falcon XE 4.1 Straight 6

Summary:

Have YOU driven a Ford lately?

Faults:

Thermostat needed to be replaced.

Kilometers counter has stop.

Steering Box broke.

Some Rust.

General Comments:

Whoever said Fords were not good cars did not know what they were talking about.

I was given this car from my Dad.

The car came lowered, 2 1/2 inch exhaust the whole length, Extractors in pretty mink condition.

The car is one of the most reliable car I have driven. I replaced the engine due to the age of the car it was only a matter of time before something went wrong.

The whole engine was replaced. The car was even smoother then before.

The XE Ford is a very rare car to find in mink condition.

If you find one it is a great investment.

The ultimate car for cruising, And a very reliable car for a family.

The XE is a very underrated car and even now is a better buy then new model cars.

I own one of these *#$# things. For the last three years I have been doing it up (body, motor, interior, etc.) and the money tree died a death so the project is currently progressing very slowly. As for being (you seem to think) an excellent car they are OK, but have you actually driven any of the later stuff?? They are sometimes better in comfort, power and economy. However, an old dog falcon is relatively cheap to fix (they have to be with my financial controller watching my every move!) and the other problem is as they get older they need fixing more often. Oh well.

I agree with the original poster. The second poster must have a lemon. My XE Falcon 4.1 litre is a great reliable car, cheap to fix when something, which is rare, goes wrong. Preventative maintenance is the key, like with any car. I'm also happy with the economy too, which is as good or better then my friends new cars.

1983 Ford Falcon XE two fifty Crossflow

Summary:

You could drive and watch the petrol guage go down

Faults:

The passenger side door decided to come loose and fall off when my mum went to get in the car.

Exhaust rusted and sounded like a machine gun.

Oil leak, the dipstick kept on spewing out with oil.

Radiator cracked once on either side.

Head gasket blew three times.

Had to replace the front suspension as soon as I got the car (felt hard)

General Comments:

It went hard and it was a good car to thrash around corners on a wet day.

It had very heavy handling at speed under 30kms.

The petrol went so quick you would look for a petrol leak after every drive.

Good rear suspension.
