1996 Ford Laser SXi 1.6L

Summary:

No frills, no thrills

Faults:

Nothing serious, engine has always idled roughly, and is prone to stalling when cold, dealer has not been able to resolve this.

Some interior fittings are cheesy and fragile such as the brittle window winders which have been replaced due to snapping off twice.

General Comments:

Whilst the car is totally reliable, and looks nice, there isn't much else going for it.

The handling is shocking, no feedback from the over-assisted steering, choppy ride, and pathetic grip make it a chore to drive especially in wet weather.

The interior materials are cheap, and the seats are uncomfortable.

The performance is pathetic from a 1.6L vehicle, a 1.3L of any variety would probably leave it in its dust. It also has poor fuel economy, and is more expensive than my old 2.0L to run. Makes me think that the engine in this car has never operated as it was intended, maybe I got a lemon? It is very reliable however.

My Laser is a very dull car to own and drive. Yes it's dependable, but I don't expect this car to have the longevity that the Toyota did.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

Can't find myself agreeing with you. I own the KJII Liata model and have found it a very comfortable, dependable car to drive in with plenty of oomph where it's needed: so much so I'm buying one to turn into a rally car. My road car has been put through a lot (I practised precision driving in the poor thing), and in spite of its high mileage it has proven unbreakable. Turning circle isn't the greatest, but otherwise the handling is quite good. Goes well for a 4cyl and has fairly good fuel efficiency for a twin cam. Couldn't be happier with it! Maybe you just got a bit of a rotten egg?

Agreed. I just bought my KJ2 auto about a month ago now. Mileage at 116,000km. Loving it very much. The engine is very smooth and quiet for an old car. Moves like a dream. Upgraded to a 16 inch rim (205/55/16). Loving it, loving it, and very much loving it.
