1986 Ford Sierra GL 2.0 litre petrol

Summary:

A Triumph of European Engineering

Faults:

Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. The only thing I have had to do is some minor rust repairs.

General Comments:

I purchased it from an English backpacker. I use it daily to and from work, a round trip of 30 kilometres, and it never misses a beat. It cost me $500.00 NZ to purchase.

The biggest thing I had to learn was to remember was the indicator switch is on the left of the steering wheel.

Just an add on to my review; I sold the Sierra the other day for $90.00 NZ as it failed its warranty of fitness miserably. I sold it to some young lads to use as a paddock racer.

1988 Ford Sierra 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Those Pom's got it right this time

Faults:

Alternator, brand new universal replacement, $300. But mysterious because I drove for 2,000k's with warning light on, and with no problem. Mechanic said it was a possible fire risk though.

Fuel supply problem intermittent, could be a bad batch of fuel because only it occured twice in two years.

General Comments:

Real tough wagon. "Accidentally" drove it into a solid brick wall and received a tiny split on the front bumper, and a whole lot of useless bricks. Imagine a Japanese car doing the same!!

Good performance if it's allowed to rev high, keeps up with 2.0 fuel injected double overhead cam cars.

17" mags with low profile 225 tyres, makes good cornering at 130km/h.

Next step, find a Cosworth engine and drop it in.

1986 Ford Sierra Cosworth RS 2.0 DOHC 16v turbo

Summary:

The best car Ford ever made!

Faults:

Idle Control valve stopped working.

Electric window switch died.

General Comments:

Amazing Car - So fast, so good. I have driven porsche's, WRX STi's, etc, they are good, but a Cosworth is so flexible, easy to drive.

They are old cars now, so you must find a good one.

Everybody wants to race you.

1993 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 2.0 turbo petrol

Summary:

Best Ford ever built

Faults:

Nothing while I've owned it. Previous owner/importer had the engine overhauled Jan 1999 just for maintenance & he went back to the UK for a holiday to acquire hoses, gaskets etc. A couple of parts are hard to get but some bits are shared with Australian models. Some fear that if anything major stops the car, not many people will know what it is let alone how to fix it!!!

General Comments:

Virtually a one off car in Australia. One of the last ones built. Has leather, air, last model upgrades. Absolutely brilliant car that is an unknown quantity to WRX & Evo owner's. They won't come near me.

Fantastic on winding roads, wet days & trips interstate. Absolutely loved this car ever since they were first released in the UK. Never thought I'd own one but you have to be lucky in life sometimes.

I agree that the Sierra Cosworth is one of the best Fords ever built. Great handling and power. But I prefer the much smaller Escort Cosworth. Using the same engine and gearbox as the Sierra, being remarkably lighter, the Escort is more aggressive during overtaking and acceleration. However I love both, the Sierra for its handling and the Escort for its aggressivity.

The Escort Cosworth is 200lb's heavier than the 2wd Sierra Cosworth and a little heavier than the sierra cos 4x4, this is due to the materials used in the interior and the fact the Escort Cossie body shell is built like a panzer tank. From my experience, the Escort has to knock out 250bhp before it can convincingly beat a 2wd Sapphire Cosworth, I know because I built the bloody things!!!!!!
