1987 Holden Camira SLX 2.0

Summary:

GM's late '80s masterpiece

Faults:

Fourth main bearing collapsed. Replaced with a jam tin home made device. Worked well, but the exhaust stunk of rotten apricots.

General Comments:

One of the most riveting drives you can imagine. Acceleration will cause a constriction in your spine. This car gets so many looks I have to wear shades. Holden's in line four is turbine smooth and out-does my Jaguar V12. Auto gearbox changes like a racing F1 machine. Buy one - you will not regret it.

No really, the Camira was a fabulous car in the 80s and is still quite a good performer today. All I can say is that with the current petrol price, no one can go past the Camira as the new "Commodore" - very roomy and powerful car.

Summary:

The car is a great performer and a joy to drive

Faults:

The automatic gear kick back is very pronounced and rough between third and second gear

The suspension seems to be to low in relation to driving over driveways or parking against low to ground wheel bollards.

The radio - cassette speakers are placed in the two front doors and the wiring from the body to the doors is kinked up and causes bad reception and static.

General Comments:

This car handles extremely well and it is a delight to drive around.

The boot area is enormous for a small car and ideal for carrying a tool box to still leave abundant space for shopping bags etc.

The motor is very clean with all of the vital lubricant containers and dip sticks very visible and easy to access.

Drivers visibility is excellent to all areas around the car with no blind spots, even when towing a trailer.

The interior is in perfect condition and well laid out for comfortable driving.

Faults:

I had to change the alternator when I bought the car.

The gear changing was rough (I didn't know what was the problem).

Air conditioning doesn't work that well.

General Comments:

I did 140 kilometres each day to and from work and I haven't got any problem since I changed the alternator.

ITs very reliable and wasn't bad at all on fuel.

Summary:

Hard to kill Bargain

Faults:

Clicking Velocity joints. worn ball joints.Other major Steering components are Severely worn Due to paddock punishment. Front Struts springs are Bent and stiff. Once wouldn't start. Due to Ignition Module.$60 and it was on its way again.

General Comments:

The car was Generally in good condition When purchased. Was purchased rather cheap as a Cattle herding car. Has seen every type of ditch and ruff land I can offer it. It has been taking full on Abuse for 5 years Now. And I am not gentle with it. Rather powerful and does good Slides and Spins. Clutch has faired well from the constant Dropping. Great on fuel. Strong Velosity Joints unlike many other competitors From that Era. The Car is very Battered and Ugly looking, but are good looking Cars When the bodys Are straight.

1987 Holden Camira JE 2.0 EFI unleaded

Summary:

Has good interior potential

Faults:

Air conditioner unit brackets have bent, causing the power steering/air conditioner unit belts to run diagonally.

CV joints are just starting to play up.

Original radio/cassette player didn't last the trip home. Has been replaced with Pioneer head unit and new speakers.

Gearbox died at around 112,000km. Replaced by a second hand gearbox.

Shock absorbers have completely had it since about 113,000km. Will be replaced with low, hard suspension.

Catalytic Converter insides crumbled around 112,000km. Has yet to be replaced.

Interior is literally coming apart at the seems from 114,000km.

Gearbox unnecessarily kicks back a gear when accelerating.

General Comments:

This car does have a good acceleration and decent top speed.

Could have more back seat leg room.

I would like to have alloy wheels all around, but I have been told that this car's wheel stud pattern is different to all other car's stud patterns.

It did not have any parcel-shelf speakers and had no signs of ever having them when I bought it.

I would like to put bucket seats and new carpet, rear seat and dash, but do not know what I need to know and what other model cars would have the same size dash.

Although there were never any rear speakers in my car, a 1988 SLX Camira, the there are still speaker wires run from behind the head unit to the boot. they are taped to the other wires running to the lights in the boot on the right hand side. i believe they are bule and grey.

More people like that, and the Camira would have a fantastic reputation.

Any one that doesn't like Camiras, or thinks that they are slow, or thinks that they handle like a tank, obviously has never driven a Camira. Or has never driven mine!!!

I own a 87 camira and have no trouble. it has done 600,000km and still goes hard. has been in many accidents and hasn't received a scratch.
