1979 Holden Commodore SL 3.3 Blue petrol Engine

Summary:

A reliable car that never gives up

Faults:

I blew the diff from burnouts.

Steering rack went on it.

Manifold gasket blew on red engine.

Leaks water.

General Comments:

The 3.3 red engine is nothing but trouble. After replacing the engine with a 3.3 blue engine, I have got a increase of power and it's smoother when sitting at 100 km/h.

After taking my car on a 4WD tracks, it just shows how tough a Commodore is. I am really happy with the car.

1979 Holden Commodore VB 3.3 202 Straight Six

Summary:

A very solid reliable car

Faults:

Clutch replaced at 135000 km.

Clutch pedal broke.

Clock works on and off.

Fuel gauge slightly inaccurate.

General Comments:

This car is mechanically A1. Have never had any serious problems with it. The only major repair was a clutch replacement at 135000 km shortly after purchasing it.

Other minor things include the air filter working loose which affected fuel consumption. The fuel gauge appears to be not calibrated accurately.

Interior is immaculate. Plush red vinyl seat fittings. Very comfortable.

Performance is superb. The 202 red motor packs a load of punch. Loads of torque available at the lower end.

Reliability is equally superb. The car has never broken down once.

Handling is solid. No power steering, but feedback is very good. Can be a slight handful in the wet.

The only minor con is the fuel consumption. Returns between 12 - 12.5L / 100km in the city. Improves to 9 - 9.5L / 100km on the highway.

Would not get 9L of fuel per 100 km mate. I own a HQ ute that gets only 400km off of a 70L tank when it is run dry. Also own a supercharged Toyota Aurion that gets 8.5 per 100km. Very inaccurate.

You can get good economy with Commodore 202s, particularly on highway runs. Have owned quite a few, the HQ is a very heavy, un-aerodynamic car, and they are harsh on fuel.

1979 Holden Commodore VB 253 Red Motor

Summary:

I'm generally happy with the car, it's quick, and only small odd jobs required

Faults:

Power Steering Pump whines, and leaks.

Heater control panel shot-circuited.

Front end creaking.

Takes a long time to start.

Reversing lights don't work.

Diff whines.

Bent linkages on the M20 gearbox.

Alternator failed.

General Comments:

The car, when I bought it, had quite a bit spent on the engine, so the car is seriously quick in a straight line.

Handling isn't that great, the car has been lowered, but not fitted with the according shock absorbers etc. So it is still floaty at high speeds.

The interior was badly damaged from Australian summer conditions. (Dash cracked, steering wheel warped)

*update* - Just had front-end repaired at a price of $380, no more creaking, and steers like a new car!

New diff goes in tonight.

1979 Holden Commodore 2.8

Summary:

Cheap car that has good performance potential with a bigger engine.

Faults:

Had the clutch cable break.

Had the clutch fail.

Windows were scratched by the rock hard window seals.

Holes in the exhaust.

Brakes are squishy.

Clutch pedal squeaky.

Rusted headlight reflectors.

General Comments:

Good cheap car, though not cheap to run.

A car that has held up well considering its 24 years old.

1979 Holden Commodore VB 202ci 3.3 litre red motor

Summary:

A pretty cheap buy, but it has had a lot spent on it to keep it going

Faults:

Had a few problems.

At the moment like most commodores of this era the tri-matic 3 speed transmission has gone.

Had a few problems with the tail shaft.

And the steering isn't too good either.

General Comments:

It isn't very good economy wise chewing petrol like there's no tomorrow, inside the cabin is good though, lots of room. But 80kw from the 202 isn't really good enough for the car of this size.

1979 Holden Commodore SL/E 5.0 V8 leaded petrol

Summary:

Great performance for the price

Faults:

Brake booster - easy fix.

Spark plug failure - replaced.

Needs tuning often if you want peak performance.

General Comments:

Great car if you want to spend a little extra and do it up, you would have a beast in your mitts.

Look for already done up ones, for you can get a good one like mine for under 5500.

Rust and paint jobs are a problem, but a respray will fix that.

Put a 2.5" exhaust on the car and you'll have a very loud sounding car to show off.
