1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0
Summary:
A squeaky, rattler truck with a robust in-line 6
Faults:
Front passenger side power window motor broke 1 week after purchase.
Fuel gage only works sometimes.
Engine stalls when fuel tank has 1/4 fuel only when turning left.
General Comments:
Purchased this vehicles without a mechanical inspection on a whim for $5000 in the dark!
The passenger power window broke within the first week of ownership, cost $560 to replace, OUCH!
This 4.0 straight six has an enormous amount of torque. It doesn't have to haul a huge amount of weight, so it's very rapid and can take off from a standstill very quickly.
It does not ride very well, so don't expect a car-like ride. It's very much a "truck" that looks like a smooth modern 4x4. This probably appeals too many people anyway.
My 98 model has a number of squeaks and rattles coming from God knows where. Trying to pin-point them all and sort them out would be very time consuming, you've just got to live with them. My mechanic has told me they're all like that.
There is one particular thud that is annoying that seems to be coming from the front passenger side suspension.
I also have a fuel surge problem when the car has 1/4 tank of fuel. The engine will stall when turning left, which can be really dangerous as power is disabled through brakes and steering! You need to stop the vehicle and re-start. I overcome this problem by always making sure there is more than 1/4 tank of fuel!!!
Reverse sounds noisy, but the mechanic says it's fine.
Plastic door strips and fenders have faded badly due to the harsh Australian sun, but the paint seems to be holding up well.
Silly place to keep a spare (up against the side of the boot) as it takes a fair amount of space away from cargo.
Be very careful in the wet! This thing can get very tail happy in 2wd. Make sure the tires are good quality and your right foot isn't too heavy mid corner.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

A quick update on the Cherokee: After 4 months of regular city driving and a couple of 4 hour highway runs, the Jeep hasn't missed a beat. The engine still continues to impress with its effortless torque, the air conditioning is cold and strong, and it has started to grow on me the more I drive it.
The few little annoyances (rattles and fuel gauge glitch) are still there, but seem to give the truck a little character.
All in all, it has been a great bargain buy and the best thing about it is its practicality and usability. It's a car you can take anywhere without the worry of someone dinging or scratching; a couple more marks just give it more personality.

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport has been great. The best vehicle I have owned. It has not given me any major problems over the past 8 years. It has been terrific off road and on the city streets as well as the interstates. Great utility vehicle.
