1988 Mazda RX7 Turbo Convertible 2.6 turbo

Summary:

Supercar power, BUT cheap to run it's not!!

Faults:

A few minor electrical glitches! Switches! Replaced and fine now!

General Comments:

I love my rotaries! I have two convertible 88 model turbos, and a 88 turbo coupe as well! They are all modified to different levels! The coupe has 40000ks on it with mild turbo port, Hiflo S5 turbo, HKS fcon etc! About 200hp!

The first convertible has 10000ks on a new motor /box/diff! It runs a Microtech computer, Walbro fuel pump, Garrett to3/o4 turbo, Tial wastegate, HKS BOV; Ford white 1600cc injectors, 3 1/2 inch ss single exhaust! Etc etc etc! It's good for 280hp to the wheels!

The last convertible is mild turbo port, Hiflo S5 Hitachi turbo, big Greddy Fmic, Microtech lt-10s with dashboard; 2 1/2 inch dual SS exhaust, and heaps more. Good for 210hp on a dyno last week!

As I said I love them! My fast convertible spins the wheels just from power to third gear easily! They are ridiculously expensive to run (fuel/oil), BUT SO SO worth it!!! My hardtop is being setup to hillclimb!! Fun fun fun!!! They all have widebody guards! One convertible has BN style kit! The others both have GP style bodykits! Mine have all been uber reliable!!! Love em! Did I say I love em LOL?

I'm lucky to be getting 250ks out of a tank of 98ron. Fuel at $90 to fill! The worked convertible I'd be lucky to get 180ks from the same size 65l tank! Silly eh? I have a lead foot though! Why would you own one otherwise? It would be a waste! Remember A REDLINE A DAY KEEPS THE CARBON AWAY!!! And HOW CAN YOU TAKE A PERFECT APEX WITHOUT AN APEX OR SIX OR TWELVE UNDER THE HOOD? LOL!!

1988 Mazda RX7 FC Series 4 1.3 rotary

Summary:

Zoom Zoom! Buy one now!

Faults:

Wouldn't start (engine was turning over, but not starting). After much research, and time off the road, was only a AUD$55 fix. Too easy, and I'll tell you how.

Alternator died. This is uncommon, but mine was due to the excessive heat I exposed it too. Mechanic said I cooked it. whoops!

General Comments:

Extremely fast car. At standard, you will clean up most competitors sports cars up to 1991 models (quite a few later models also). This was the car branded porche beater of its day (actually looks like the porches of that year).

Don't buy one if you don't have experience with fast cars. You may injur yourself. These produce 150kw out of a car that has a kerb weight of 1.2 Tonne. But, in saying that, this is a very safe car, as there is solid steel bars all around you.

When driving a turbo charged 13B rotary, the power doesn't kick in until the engine speed is higher than 2800 RPM. Below that engine speed is fine for economic driving, but quite sluggish. once over that at 3500 RPM, the turbo kicks in, and you're glued to the seat.

Fuel efficiency is how you make it. Although definately below the average family sedan economy. If you drive it hard, you consume as much as a V8. But drive it slowly, and keep away from turbo boost, you have an affordable V6. I get 400kms out of 50L with mixed driving styles.

Handling is brilliant. This car is glued to the road, no matter what suspension you get on it. The RX7 has always been known for it's great handling.

Reliability wise, with the right knowledge of rotarys, and knowing your mechanic, they are more reliable than most cylinder engines, and especially of this year. The rotary actually has less parts that can go wrong compared to cylinder engines. I have had no electrical faults that I see reported so often in rx7's (most of which are due to previous owners neglect anyways)

Below is a need to know if you're buying an RX7.

The starting problem I had is inherent with rx7's from 1987 through 1990. The problem is that the car actually floods once turned off (this is due to fuel left in the pipeline leaking accross the spark plugs). The fix for this particular year, is to install a switch that cuts the fuel pump. Simply turn the pump off while trying to start, then when the engine speed starts to pick up, switch it back on, and you're on your way. In the later models (some 1989 onwards) have this feature built in to the accelerator (when starting, put the pedal flat to the floor and it turns off the pump).

All in all, this is an amazing vehicle that should not be over looked. If you are in the market for a sports car this is one you don't want to miss.

I have a 1988 RX7, and it's by far the most awesome piece of car I have ever come across. It does 0-100 in 4.0 sec flat.

I had the same starting problem, but my mechanic insisted it was the injector, but I now will suggest running a bypass to the fuel pump!! Thanx.

I had the same starting problem, but I just removed what I think it was; the ignition fuse, then tried turning it over and it won't start obviously, but it clears the fuel out, then plug the fuse back in and it starts first shot!!!

I have a 1989 Mazda RX-7. Doesn't have that problem at all. It has a great power to weight ratio; best car I've ever owned.

1988 Mazda RX7 13b turbo

Summary:

Good compact light weight race car

Faults:

The car's electrics are as bad as they come, the dash board and heater lights flicker on and off intermittently, the window wipers only works on the second fastest setting.

On hot days the car is easily flooded once turned off, you will find yourself unable to start the car for at least 30 minutes, In urgent situations I have found myself removing the fuel injection fuse, kick the engine over a few times then replace the fuse to start it, If you don't know about cars you could be stuck for a while.

General Comments:

These cars put out good power so even if the car is stock you have a winner.

My car has a brass button clutch which is good for racing, on the other hand if you get caught in traffic it makes it very difficult to drive.

My previous car was a Nissan Skyline R32, my rx7 is definitely on par with that monster 6 cylinder turbo.

Sure you didn't have a Nissan Sentra with a vacuum leak before this? Because no near stock rotary will get to see even the license plate of a RB26DET-T Skyline!!

The guy said he had a R32 skyline, they came with a RB20DET, only the GTR came with the RB26DETT, so if it was the 2ltr, they are about the same.
