1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3

Summary:

A great car, superbly built before advanced electronics

Faults:

Radiator sprung a leak at 130k.

Water leak in the boot, which took forever to locate. Had to take out the rear window. Small hole bottom left corner. Now dry.

Query - When braking and slowing to a near stop, it will sometimes stall. Checked by auto elec, auto trans and mechanic with no luck.. Idle control valve replaced; still same. Any help appreciated.

General Comments:

This is an amazing car. Handles very well with 16x7 mags and tyres, and it's a pleasure to drive on long trips.

Can cruise effortlessly at 130k's all day.

Re: stalling when stopping, check the vacuum hoses in the engine component. A vacuum leak can cause that.

Over voltage protection relay behind battery faulty, or CO tower adjustment.

1986 Mercedes-Benz 190 190E 2.0L

Summary:

Great luxury bargain

Faults:

Sunroof driving cable needs replacement.

Had to replace alternator.

General Comments:

This car is a dream to drive for its age.

It is not overpowered, but does very well both in the city and on the freeway.

Quite economic (10l/100km in the city)

Materials used inside are high quality. after 21 years the inside of my mercedes is close to pristine.

Very good paint job - still looking good for age.

It is very easy to get your hands on parts for the 190s as there are still so many around.

1991 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 1.8 petrol

Summary:

They don't make 'em like this anymore..

Faults:

A couple of electrical failures - one electric window doesn't work, and the electric mirror and electric aerial have also failed. Not unexpected in a car of this age.

General Comments:

Had to hunt around a while to find a nice one, but believe me the build quality of these cars is exceptional. This 16 year old 160k model does not have a single squeak or rattle.

Comfortable to drive, and still looks great in bright, unmarked white.

Being a 1.8 litre auto, the performance is modest, but that kind of misses the point - these cars were designed with cruising in mind.

One really pleasantly surprising aspect of this car is the way it handles - turns in really sharp and tidily - a definite bonus, and I can see why the powerful EVO models are so sought after.

When I consider that this only cost me the equivalent of a 8-10 year old Holden to buy, I think it has been money very well spent.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 190 D 2.5 2.5 diesel

Summary:

Substance exemplified: a bare bones diesel rocket, inspires total confidence

Faults:

Replaced old shock absorbers and various worn suspension bushes and rubbers etc. when purchased.

Fitted new water pump when purchased.

There is a minor leak in the automatic transmission, from a sensor plug, which unfortunately cannot be rectified without removing and dissembling the transmission to access the plug housing.

There is a sensor on the fan belt that disables the air conditioning when maximum power is required, and if belt slip is detected. The sensor malfunctioned, and required rectification.

General Comments:

This car is marvellous; at its best on the highway.

A beautiful drive. After 22 years and 275,000 kilometres, and a few dings and scrapes, there is not a single rattle.

It might be old technology to go without a turbo, but the 2.5 makes an excellent argument: at around 7 litres/100kms, clockwork reliability, and plenty of torque.

Not much glamour; all substance.

I strongly recommend picking one up!

A turbo adds stress to engine and excess heat... Turbodiesels require more effort to keep running... must change oil more often for turbo to last.. also cooling issues are greater..

I own a 85 190D with 2.2... Slow as hell.

I have a 1988 190d. It's done close on 400,000 and still does just under 8 litres to 100km. An absolutely wonderful car.

Hi I'm twenty and am the proud owner of a 91 E300 with the 3.0 liter inline six. I love my car, but what could be done to increase power as it is very slow. I don't race my cars and drive slower than most people, but I also have a 98' Crown Vic and the difference is night and day. I know the Benz will never be as fast as my V8 Vic, but I would at least like a little more power. Please help. Thanks!
