1965 Mercedes-Benz 250 S 2.5 litre six

Summary:

Beautifully handcrafted German car - exceptional engineering

Faults:

Brake booster diaphragm.

General Comments:

A beauty! Is a very early w108 with some parts from the outgoing 220 series, eg, oil bath air cleaner. Many parts are stamped with the year 1965.

This car has been converted to LPG and is surprisingly nimble. Exceptional handling from a car of its vintage, and I feel like I am in a 1960s spy movie throwing it into corners. This car keeps step with modern traffic and is a real head turner.

The car was 'lost' for most of its life, having been driven into a barn in outback NSW in the early 1980s and forgotten. Was 'discovered' and restored including a $12000 engine rebuild and she sparkles. Being in a dry environment saved her from rust problems, and it's now the family's pride and joy.

Talk of selling 'the merc' and replacing her with something newer - even another Mercedes brings howls of protest from the two teenage kids.

If you are considering a classic 'tombstone' Mercedes beware - rust is a problem and parts are hideously expensive. Brake booster replacement $3500 aus quoted from a dealership! Aussie Holden V8 booster diaphragm suited at a cost of a couple of hundred dollars.

These cars were hand built up until '66 or '67.

1975 Mercedes-Benz 250 2.3L

Summary:

The best car ever!!!

Faults:

Well, nothing that shouldn't happen to a 32 year old car.

Power steering connection leaked. It was just a matter of changing the ring.

I got a new battery. Then I changed the exhaust because the old one was rusty. I got the big boy (Benz) 2 inch double pipe chrome straight exhaust. That's pretty much it.

General Comments:

Drives like a beauty!! I got there a mix of Clarion and "home made" sound system. With the new exhaust it sounds really like a beast! When started light blue smoke comes out, but in few seconds it disappears. It has enough hp for the city.

For comfort I got it tinted with a 95% darkness tint. I have driven many cars, this one (and VW Golf GTI 89) are the best! They have their own spirit. If you have one or are planning on buying one, remember one thing. Benz likes to be washed!

Sometime he doesn't feel like going quickly, and sometime he just flies overtaking all the "tuned up cars" with body kits and stuff. Listen, if you are planing on buying one as a first car or just for driving every day, then do so!! Don't wait anymore! You won't regret it.

1972 Mercedes-Benz 250 2.5 Litre petrol (Leaded)

Summary:

The ultimate car for anyone that wants something different!

Faults:

Battery will sometimes run flat (must be an old battery, will get a new one soon!)

The dash clock does not work, neither does the automatic column shift selector display (which I am getting fixed next week for approx 200 - 300).

General Comments:

Now, I read the review before I bought this car from the guy from Israel and the other reviews wary of the things I should look out for when purchasing.

However, this car has been looked after all its life, and is becoming a true classic.

I am 16, and have just started driving it, the column shift automatic takes a bit to get used to. Have given it a thorough clean etc, installed a new Clarion sound system and the car is running like an absolute dream! Could not have dreamed for a better first car!

1969 Mercedes-Benz 250 CE 2.5

Summary:

A under rated and under priced classic

Faults:

Oil cooler.

Shock absorbers.

Om-meter stopped working.

General Comments:

The car is a head turner.

No drag car, but on the plus side reasonable on fuel.

Handles and brakes exceptionally well for a car of it's year and mileage.

1977 Mercedes-Benz 250 2.5 in-line six petrol, LPG

Summary:

A timeless classic, delivering comfortable, economical and supremely reliable motoring

Faults:

A front suspension ball-joint needed replacing. An after-market part was used that cost (at $150) about half the Mercedes original.

The plastic capping on the boot ledge broke.

The air-pump door-locking system sprang a leak after a lock was forced down.

Hit full on at the point of the left front wheel at 60kph by an old Holden. The Holden died on the spot. I was able to drive the Benz into a nearby parking space, engine still purring away and all essential organs intact. Owing to a 20cm displacement of the engine compartment chassis, though, the car has sadly to be written off.

General Comments:

The fact that the car had been reconditioned and had LPG fitted at around the 200,000km mark was a major attraction, though cold starts were a bit tricky owing to the compression required to pull in the first puff of gas. It cost no more than my old Nissan wagon to run. While no dragster, it moved quite smoothly around town and was a lovely touring car. It would stall on petrol in town, but would handle hills better on petrol than on gas when travelling at over about 80kph.

A bright orange with all the chrome trimmings, when polished it always seemed to turn heads and inspire envy. Sadly missed.

Best car ever. I also have MB 250 with M 123 motor.

1974 Mercedes-Benz 250 2.5ltr straight six

Faults:

I have put 40 000 kms on this car, now showing 280 000 kms and have only had to replace the timing chain.

General Comments:

Great smooth riding classic car. More reliable than a donkey. Is thirsty though. If purchasing one check for rust in the floorwells and in and around the firewall/engine bay.
