1992 Mitsubishi Magna Executive 2.6 litre fuel injected

Summary:

Yes it is the best... shame about the fuel though

Faults:

Nothing mechanical has gone wrong with the car, and none of the electronics have stuffed up, but when I was going to get a road worthy, the tyres were the originals and they were worn out, so I had to pay for 5 new tyres (one for spare.)

General Comments:

This car is so good. I was apprehensive when buying it because it was built in 1992, so I thought it would be uncomfortable like my old Commodore and would break down. But I was desperate for a new car.

Now I love it. It is so comfortable and driving it is a pleasure. But it likes its petrol a lot like a 6 cylinder.

1992 Mitsubishi Magna TR Executive 2.6 Litre Astron Mark II

Summary:

FANTASTIC, yet likes its petrol

Faults:

Nothing really has gone wrong. The battery went flat when I accidentally left the headlights on a foggy day, but besides that, nothing.

General Comments:

The car is a bit sluggish when going up hills, but if you need to speed up quick the fuel injection helps it along. Although it does like its petrol like a 6 cylinder, even though it's a 4 cylinder.

The seats are so comfortable and it's so smooth driving. Even going over bumps isn't uncomfortable

My husband just got a new Camry, and of course like the stay home mum I got a used car, but I prefer to drive the Magna than the Camry.

The air con and heating are great. The only bad thing about it is the fuel consumption.

1992 Mitsubishi Magna TR Executive 2.6 Litre Astron Mark II

Summary:

It is VERY COOL

Faults:

The steering wheel made noises that my kids laughed at, at around 150,000 KM. That just needed some spray. Besides that nothing else.

General Comments:

Even though it is pretty old, it still looks very nice and drives 100 time better than my old 1988 Camira SL.

If anyone was looking for a used car under $5999, I would recommend this car. I did 90 around a sharp corner the other day, and it handled it beautifully.

1992 Mitsubishi Magna Verada 2.6 fuel injected

Summary:

I love it to death!!!

Faults:

Hood lining.

The front right hand brake has only started to grind, but it is only pads.

General Comments:

I love the way it handles really well for a family car, and it is pretty fast for a 4 cylinder engine.

Interior is comfortable, and looks great.

1992 Mitsubishi Magna Executive 2.6L 4 cylinder

Summary:

Good, but bad

Faults:

The water pump stopped working and cause the engine to blow up on the highway.

The rear internal door handles broke.

The head gasket blew at 220000KS.

General Comments:

This car is seriously dodgy and I recommend not to buy one unless you're dumb like my friend and his Mitsubishi Verada (luxury Magna)

Buy one new and it'll be all right mate!

Step down from a Bentley to a $500 Magna? Boy, what bad luck.

Just sounds like the cooling system hasn't been maintained in the cars history. I've driven a TR up to 250,000 and it's only just had a minor problem with the water pump now, which is a simple and cheap replacement provided you source the parts from the right places. Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck, they're really good cars when you get a gem out of what seems to be a pile of rocks in terms of service histories.

Look after it, service it and it will go forever!

1992 Mitsubishi Magna GLX 2.6 Astron II carby

Summary:

A little gem

Faults:

Outer left CV joint needed replacing (It cost $130 to replace including a small service; a bargain)

Starter motor works needs replacing, but is still operational.

Reverse gear seems to stick and you often need to "double clutch it" to get it into gear when reversing.

Fuel pump needed replacing.

General Comments:

First of all I'm pretty picky, so as much as I love a lot of cars, I can always find several negative aspects of them. Despite my love for it, the TR Magna is no exception.

The TR Magna is extremely comfortable for its era and has a good-looking exterior to it.

It has awful handling characteristics. It understeers a lot and has terrible body-roll. A rear sway bar should fix most of the body-roll problem. If you have a lead foot for corners this car is not for you. With stock 14" wheels and no rear sway bar, the car struggles to find traction around corners at a slightly quicker speed.

The drivers position is fantastic. More comfortable than late model Commodores and Falcons in my opinion.

The turning circle is amongst the worst of any car its size. Being a front-wheel drive sedan and a relatively large car, its 12 metre turning circle can be annoying when manouvering, especially when parking or doing U-turns.

The car is very quiet in stock form and so is fantastic for long trips. Off-setting this is the engine's unwillingness to rev. It sounds like it is struggling over 3500 RPM and it whines considerably at such RPM. Installing a sports muffler like a Lukey LR2779 is a great way to create better flow, a nice note and downplay the sound of the whiney engine at higher revs.

The car has a lot of leg-room upfront and tall drivers in particular will find the TR magna a very comofortable car to drive in. The dash is quite appealing for its era and has a nice curve to it. Forget about the stock speakers though, you will definitely need aftermarket ones. On that note, however the TR Magna has a lot of audio potential. Due to its in-cabin shape it has great acoustics and several TR Magna owners have won awards for their efforts in car audio.

Like most cars of its age, the brakes aren't all that good, but they do the job. Being front-wheel drive, the car feels very stable and handles quite well in the wet. The car will do up to about 165km/h and feels surprisingly stable at high speeds.

The 2.6L carby engine is quite honestly, terrible performance-wise. The fuel consumption is on par with most 6 cylinder sedans and with an 85kw engine in an almost 1400kg car, it is obviously very unresponsive.

The car is reliable as ever. One of the only positive aspects of the 2.6L Astron II engine is it is extremely tough. These engines last a long time and can easily last over 300,000kms if maintained correctly. Parts are very cheap for TR Magnas so for the small number of repairs and maintenance required, it is almost always very cheap to fix or replace.

Having said all this, the TR Magna is an extremely good-value-for-money car. It you want a really comfortable, reliable, good-looking car and don't get care much about kilowatts and AWD-type handling this is a fantastic car for the price.
