1988 Nissan Pathfinder 2.4 petrol

Summary:

An affordable great 4x4

Faults:

The battery did not last long due to a faulty alternator.

Faulty electrics. The lights and window wipers don't work all the time.

Smashed windscreen.

General Comments:

Very reliable all round.

Not enough power for the petrol it uses. A little sluggish uphills. Will get at the most 500 kilometers on a tank of fuel. Only a 4 cylinder motor.

Drives very well on and off road.

Space for your camping equipment with enough space for yourself and your missus to sleep in the back in-case its pissing down.

1997 Nissan Pathfinder Ti 3.5

Summary:

For the right price a great car for on and off road trips

Faults:

Oil pressure switch, auto transmission started making some strange sounds when in P or N yet to be looked at by the dealer under an extended warranty agreement.

General Comments:

Car is nice, good off road as well as on however we did find this varied depending on tires. Original tires where HT, and we opted to put Pirrelli Scorpion AT on it. The road noise improvement was remarkable.

On a downside, cabin room for rear passengers (if their adults) is not comfortable. Fuel consumption is shocking, with approx 450km city driving (that's when the orange light comes on anyway).

Lots of engine noise close to 3000rpm and above.

1987 Nissan Pathfinder 2.4 petrol

Summary:

Solid Off-Road, Car-like On-Road

Faults:

Ignition Points Burnt out.

Starter motor is on it's way out. Needs to be reconditioned.

Exhaust runs too close to passenger foot-well and has melted the carpet.

Seats (front and rear) have very little comfort on long trips however trim has held together and in "As New" condition for a 15 year old car.

General Comments:

I knew very little about the service history when purchasing my Pathfinder, but have been very happy with the reliability of it.

It's ability off-road is excellent. It goes where some brand new vehicles get stuck. I have yet to find a track to stump my pathfinder.

The only problem I have with my car is the fuel economy is not the greatest. I get approx. 400-500 kilometre's per tank. I suspect this is because the engine is under-powered and has to push a little over 1.6 tonnes without a load.

It definantely needs the 3.0L V6 of the next model.

Plenty of passenger and luggage room.

2001 Nissan Pathfinder Z30 3.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

A true 4WD with the comfort, performance and fuel economy of a two litre sedan!

Faults:

Nothing at all!

General Comments:

A true 4WD with the comfort, performance and fuel economy of a executive sedan.

I own a Tristram trailer boat which weighs 3 tons (which is a lot for most of the competition) which I often bring on our family holidays, and the power and torque produced by the engine is sensational.

The only problem I think the car has is the noise produced by the turbo, it sounds like a high pitched siren.

I to have this model pathfinder and noticed also that after towing my boat on a long trip, the high pitched siren of the turbo appeared.

After another year went by the turbo sound became annoying so I got a new turbo under warranty. The good thing about waiting a year or so is that Nissan acknowledged this fault in the turbo and redesigned the unit.

This means that the new turbo is quiet as, even under load. I have given the new turbo a thrashing and its still quiet.

I was so pleased that they fixed it, as I am back to loving my car again. The really go well.

I to own a z30 Pathfinder, purchased new in August 2001. It has know covered 125000 km. They are a great vehicle to drive. The diff was repaired at about 25000km, the air flow meter was replaced and continually needs servicing. The air bag light wouldn't go out and was repaired. It now has some sort of flat spot under certain acceleration situations, but I'm still very impressed with this vehicle, power, handling, ride etc.

I have a 2001 Z30 Pathfinder with 225,000KM on the clock. Had it since new. At 175,000KM it blew a whole in piston number 3. Apparently all the Z30 motors will do this at about the 175K mark. Motor rebuild cost $10,000.00.

I am reluctant to buy another Nissan diesel.
