1989 Nissan Pulsar Vector Ti 1.8L Holden Astra Engine

Summary:

A great commuter/first car

Faults:

The 'ECM' (Engine Control Module) goes silly sometimes, shutting the engine down for unknown reasons.

The poorly designed oil cap leaks oil. I have changed it a few times with one from a wrecked car, however it still leaks.

The clear coat on the body has deteriorated, leaving unsightly white marks all over the car. They do polish out however. I don't mind as they stop people from stealing my car!!

General Comments:

Being a more modern engine than my old KA Laser, it is easy to service myself. I changed the oil, belts and filters with little technical experience in an afternoon.

For a small car, the ride is quite soft and smooth.

I can get approximately 400km out of a tank of fuel, only going as low as halfway between empty and 1/4 full.

My pulsar is Auto, gear changes do produce quite a large jolt at times.

1989 Nissan Pulsar Vector 1.8

Summary:

Reliable, good commuter or first car

Faults:

Nothing major, just general wear and tear; distributor and ignition module.

The airconditioner stopped blowing cool air, was quoted $1200 to fix, decided winding down the windows was a better option.

Replaced exhaust with standard size, ran smoother and quieter.

I'm still in touch with the current owner who's had brakes, bushes, shocks done, etc.

Synchro was also worn on second gear which required a slightly more delicate approach to gear changes.

General Comments:

Reliable, nice to drive, plenty of low end grunt for a little commuter, steers nice with plenty of feel, comfortable seats. Boxy shape makes it a boon to park. Excellent fuel economy.

Noisy at speed, makes long trips tiring (don't buy one with a modified exhaust if you plan to drive long distances). The trusty old family four built by Holden engine is unwilling to rev with little top end, it's no sports car, but still more grunt than say a similar yr laser or corolla.

The little boot is pretty hopeless, buy a hatchback.

1989 Nissan Pulsar Q13 1.8L Unleaded

Faults:

The Instrument cluster needed replacing as the fuel, temperature and revs all were not responding properly.

The radiator fan stopped due to a link with the Instrument cluster.

General Comments:

Great little car with a surprising amount of power for the engine size! Handles great for an old car and is quite comfortable.

Seats are really comfortable with enough room for passenger comfort.

My instrument cluster died as well. Only thing that works is the speedometer. Still haven't fixed it, but will now that you said the radiator fan is linked to the cluster. Car could overheat and then disaster! Great little car though. Its done 265000km and feels tight and perky! Yeah baby. Bought with 12 months registration, great CD music system, no rust, nice interior, clean engine, great paint job, new tires all for $2200. GO THE 1990 NISSAN REEBOK PULSAR! BUT: beware the CLUSTER people, it's a quitter! Booooo to the cluster. Hate the cluster!

Did get the luster electronics overhauled for $250, and works perfectly.

Nissan's own workshop refused to try, and suggested I dump the car - what do they know!

The problem was caused by pressure on the circuit cable at the back of the cluster, rubbing a dashboard brace located centrally immediately behind the cluster panel itself (i.e. pushing against the cluster circuit cable).

1989 Nissan Pulsar Ti 1.8L

Summary:

A very reliable car, with comfort and respectable power.

Faults:

Front CV joints both left and right.

Thermostat and petrol sensors failed.

Dash gauges fail to work sometimes.

Warning indicators on dashboard i.e. petrol, brake fluid, battery no longer work.

Has had many problems with the 'ECM' Engine Control Module due to unknown reasons.

The exterior seals around the cars windows have shrunk and come a drift from their position.

Paint around the car has begun to oxidize.

The oil pump has been replaced.

It occasionally leaked oil, this was fixed with the replacement of the head gasket seal.

Sadly the central locking is a bit temperamental and the drivers window has come off it's track.

It's shock absorbers need replacement.

All of the above problems are due to wear over time. Now that it is more well looked after there have been no further problems.

General Comments:

The car in the hands of its second owner and in mine, has always done it's job to an exceptional standard.

One must note that this car's previous owner had been in over ten accidents. I am now the third owner of this car.

The performance and reliability of the 1.8L should be commended, especially considering it's age and the fact that it has been thrashed over many years.

It easily pulls of the line, though when traveling up hill or when it is due for a service it's performance is compromised.

Air-conditioning is no friend to the engine, it literally drains the cars performance. It cools the cabin well though!

Its interior has faced the test of time quite well, though the plastic on the dash has a crack and the air-conditioning vents have broken slats. The seats, door trims and carpet are still holding together nicely.

It is a very comfortable car that features Air-Conditioning, Power Steering, Windows and Mirrors, Central Locking, an Alarm System and 4 Wheel Disc Brakes.

Due to the car having a three speed automatic it lacks in the performance and economy of the manual model.

My car is a poor example of the 88-91 Nissan Pulsar Vector range, due too many unprecedented factors.

In conclusion it is still a great car, forgetting its past problems due to poor maintenance, this car will take you where you want to go without any trouble.

Reliability of this car is awesome. Economy is very good. And with minor maintenance they will serve for a long time.

PROBLEMS:

Gauges - They will fail over time. $100 to fix

Gearbox - Synchro bearings - hard to go in reverse. Put in 1st gear first, and then go into reverse. Does the trick.

1989 Nissan Pulsar GL 1.6 throttle body injected

Summary:

Economical, reliable and easy to park

Faults:

'Engine management' light is lit intermittently, without reason.

Fuel gauge will occasionally not show fuel level.

Temperature gauge will occasionally not show temperature.

Rear-washer water supply tubing began to leak.

General Comments:

My previous car was the same model, but 2 years younger.

The problems that I have encountered with this model have only been minor.

This car is a great, economical little car that doesn't mind picking up speed on the highways.

Driver and passenger seats are very comfortable, even for long trips.

Due to the small car size, leg room in the back is minimal. Not good for taking adults on long trips.

Split-folding rear seat allows larger items to be carried quite comfortably.

No modern safety features such as airbags or anti-lock braking system.

Surprisingly accurate handling when good-quality tyres are installed.
