1989 Nissan Skyline Executive 3.0 litre 6 Cylinder

Summary:

A good overall 'sleeper'

Faults:

Old Air Conditioning leaked, new gas installed.

Battery flat twice.

Hydraulic lifters get noisy with age (probably with more than 200000 kilometers on the clock). Mine were replaced.

The throttle position sensor which controls the gearbox computer was replaced with an instant 100% improvement in shifting quality. Highly recommend any Skyline Series 3 owners with automatic transmission to have this part replaced if shifting is always jerky.

Gearbox after 295000 kilometers is getting a bit worn out, as you would expect.

General Comments:

These have to be one of the most reliable cars on the roads. It has the performance to match, and doesn't suffer insurance woes of Commodore or Falcons, yet performs like one. Cosmetic parts and panels can mostly be sought from the Pintara, and engine parts from a VL Commodore if necessary. The styling perhaps could have been better, but that's the way things go.

I haven't had any of these problems apart from the rear handbrake cable.

The car is a beauty to drive, but the fuel costs are a nightmare, I wonder if there is any way to reduce the fuel consumption.

I'm a South African and own a South African assembled Nissan Skyline 3Litre S.G.L.I model 1990. The cars a beauty to drive. It's just the hydraulics that gets noisy at about 200 000 KM. It has both comfort and reliability.

I have owned an exec for 4 years now and it has over 500000k's on it, the main problems I have found is that the manifold warps and needs to be replaced by a set of extractors. Once this was done the car was great and have only had to do the usual stuff to it.

Summary:

Affordable version of a GT-R

Faults:

Air vents in dash prone to breaking.

Developed a miss, due to the module that controls the coil failing.

Turbo failure.

Front bushes in A arms wore out.

General Comments:

Very quick, great fun to get sideways.

4 door models come with horrid seat material.

No leg room in the back, particularly for a car of its size.

Excellent bargain considering the power output.

Non ABS model brakes aren't too flash, worse with a full car load.

Very high specced car all round, has all the creature comforts you need.

Everyone needs to own one once.

Common as mud here in New Zealand, but that only means good availability of parts down the road.

I have to agree with you as I also own a GTS-t, mine is a two door coupe. I have had some of the same stuff go wrong with my car. The front bushes have had to be replaced as well as the gear box needing new linkages between first and second gear. On the whole the car has served its purpose - it goes like hell and looks good doing it..
