1994 Peugeot 306 XSi 2 litre

Summary:

Terrific, sporty European hatch

Faults:

I broke a steering rod on a dirt farm road, cost $900 to fix.

Tires were badly worn when I bought it.

General Comments:

A very sporty hatch, it's great in the city and quick off the mark, but absolutely superb on the open road with a great exhaust note. I used to own a 92 205 GR; I liked the heaviness of the Peugeot, but wanted something much sportier.

It has a firm ride: I'm not sure, but mine may have been lowered slightly, and the steering is very tight through corners.

Also a practical car: the boot is huge, there is a lot of leg room in the back and it is very easy to park.

It tends to be thirsty and hard to drive, especially in the city, if it's not well-serviced; if it's regularly maintained there are no problems at all.

1994 Peugeot 306 S16 2.0 16v

Summary:

Drains the wallet with incessant maintenance though chews up the road

Faults:

Crank-shaft snapped.

1 or 2 cylinders have dropped out due to electrical faults brought on by hard suspension.

Little rattles have become more obvious around the dash though they come and go.

The front right coils had come dangerously loose creating a knocking sound in the casing.

General Comments:

Joy to drive at cruisy speeds due to the 4 wheel steering.

It is immensely heavy and you feel it when getting off the mark.

Very nice cabin with good bucket seats.

The rear seats are not very accommodating for tall people.

One of only 100 in Australia.

118 Kw (could do with another 50-100 to make it my dream car!)

1994 Peugeot 306 XT 1.8

Summary:

Why on earth did they stop making this beauty?

Faults:

There have been a few problems with this car.

We found the brakes overheated when given a bit of work. This resulted in them buckling. It was however pretty cheap to replace the disc's. Around $95 each plus labor.

The car also has a design fault with the cruise control. It is mounted behind the wheel, making visual confirmation difficult. Once you get used to it it is OK though.

The Anti-lock Braking System seems to engage prematurely on the front left wheel. I have thought about getting it seen to though I would probably prefer pulling the fuse and using my skill instead.

General Comments:

The car drives very well.

With the addition of 15 inch alloy wheels and Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, the car grips to the road beautifully. There is a slight tendency to understeer in the wet though.

The engine is both efficient and punchy. We are not usually left wanting for power, however I would have prefered the 2 litre model.

1994 Peugeot 306 XRDT 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Great on open wining roads, but not so great as a town car

Faults:

Two cooling fans replaced. This was expensive because the whole front bumper assembly and grille needed to be removed.

Three sets of glow plugs.

Battery was incorrectly sized when delivered. It took four batteries in four years to find the correctly sized battery. Thanks to Mr Exide's web site.

Rear brake cylinders failed (weeped).

Turbo pipes cracked.

Front shock absorbers weep.

General Comments:

Fast agile car. Better on hills and in turns any other car I've owned.

Dray in town at low speeds.

Steering too heavy at low speeds.

Clutch very heavy.

Needs to be kept in the "power band", that is above 1800 rpm to get the best performance.

Comfortable and pleasant to drive on long trips, but wants to sit at 130 kph!

Still on first clutch.

Very good wear on upholstery with no real signs of wear.

Paint work still in reasonable condition, and if it is unlucky enough to get a clean, still looks stunning.

Seats are comfortable and hold the body position well under heavy cornering.

Although this model does not have many bells and whistles, it is generally very balanced in the factory settings such as the dashboard illuminance, and windscreen wiper interval speed.

Good even tyre wear. These have always been Michelin MXV3A and have achieved in excess of 60,000 km per set.

The car generally has resisted eight and a half years of tough, driving. It responds well to a good trash every now and again. I think it looks forward to it.

Still hold the New Zealand land speed record for diesel cars!

I wrote this review at the end of 2002 and today (end of April 2008) I still have the car and now done 357,000km in it. Still on the first clutch and still enjoy the drive. I haven't noticed any drop off in performance since I've had it, but the engine does seem more lose and revs more freely.

1994 Peugeot 306 XR 1.8 8v petrol

Summary:

Simple and economical

Faults:

Power steering fluid leaking.

Indicator blinker making noises while driving.

Brakes worn quickly.

Body work and paint easily scratched/dented.

Pings when not used with Premium Unleaded fuel.

General Comments:

This car sticks to the road like a go-kart.

It is very easy to drive and the steering is responsive.

Gear changes are smooth when engine is warmed up, however the clutch is hard compared to others.

The cabin is well placed with everything in easy reach and positioned well.

Could have some more room for the passengers in the back, as it gets squashed with 4 or 5 people in the car.
