1980 Porsche 911 SC 3.0

Summary:

The 911 defines the 20th century collectible sporstcar

Faults:

Broken clutch cable - otherwise faultless.

General Comments:

The harder and longer the drive, the better the car gets, as if coming alive with the use.

Unfortunately it doesn't get used that often.

I love the challenge of driving it well! Although it is nowhere near as rapid as my current BMW, it is much more enjoyable, and a true driver's cars & classic.

1991 Porsche 911 964 C4

Summary:

A work of art, and a delight for the eyes and senses

Faults:

Bought the car knowingly with a slipping clutch and a few other bits and pieces. But since I got the car at a very reasonable price, then it was OK.

General Comments:

Previously I had a 1980 911 SC, nice car but hard to live with in the wet and at the limit.

Then I purchased a Boxster S 2002, and yes it's still a Porsche and a damn good one at that too. But 3 months into the ownership it was stolen.

So for some reason, I was drawn back to a 911 (I can hear people saying, he woke up to himself LOL).

This 1991 964 of mine is a delight to drive at the limit, there's so much grip and reassurance that you're always in control.

To make it a little nicer to look at, I got some nice 18 inch cup style wheels, followed by a performance chip (Steve Wong U.S.A.) which is a real treat, and also a sport cat and a bypass pipe in place of the huge rear muffler.

The performance is very noticeable, from the original 184kw (246hp) to somewhere over 210kw (281hp). Not a great deal of difference in the numbers, but the power comes on much earlier and revs much quicker. It must be the right car for me, as every time I get in for a drive, a smile is not far behind :)

1981 Porsche 911 SC 3.0

Summary:

Porsche 911...one sentence just isn't enough!

Faults:

Not starting even though turning over. Turned out to be dodgy wiring to the fuel pump. Easily fixed. Now starts first time every time.

Blown air-box. Requires tow truck and expensive repair. FIT AN AIR-BOX POP-OFF VALVE ON YOUR 911SC!!

Sunroof cable broken.

Air-con gas leaked. A/C is useless in Australia.

Emissions air-pump failed and had to be removed.

General Comments:

This is an amazing car. That's in 2007...imagine what they were like in the early 80's!! The 3.0 SC and 3.2 Carrera are brilliant. These cars are reliable, fast and made to be enjoyed every day. The engine note is intoxicating. The only thing better than the sound is the amazing power surge from 3,500 rpm to redline. My SC isn't the most powerful car (204 bhp), however at 1,160 kgs its still good for 0-60 in 6 seconds. The other amazing thing is this car still feels so well built. There are no squeaks and rattles, everything works, there's not a spot of rust and it just doesn't feel or look like a 26 year old car. Anyone who doesn't like a Porsche... has never driven or owned one!

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 3.2

Summary:

An experience not to be missed!

Faults:

Nothing major as yet, however the R/R inner CV joint boot has split & needs replacing.

Drivers seat has small split in leather on outer back-rest panel.

General Comments:

A very quick & (so far) very reliable 'super-car'!

Have dreamed of owning one since about the age of 14 (now 43), and was lucky enough to find this low mileage, NZ new example for what I considered a good price compared to other examples at the time.

It has performed superbly thus far. Starts 1st time - every time and has not missed a beat.

Build quality is outstanding, and its easy to see how this model Porsche has gained such a good reputation over the years!

Only gripe so far would be the 915 gearbox fitted to this model. It's notchy, vague, and reminiscent of those that were fitted to bedford trucks of many years ago! Once you learn not to rush gear changes however, it performs just fine.

A true 'classic' super-car well worth the investment!

Thank you for the comment on shifting. We just purchased one and I have not yet found the right touch. Very helpful!

Great to hear you are enjoying your 3.2 Carrera, I have the 1984 model.. great cars to drive, the 915 is a better, lighter and more robust gearbox than the G50, after all it was in the 2.7RS, which are very rare ($$$$) and sought after... after 5 years of owning and driving my girl almost every day, the 915 requires as slow shift, especially from 1 to second, depending on the condition of the synchro, hope this helps... happy and safe Porsche motoring.
