1997 Renault Scenic RXE 2.0

Summary:

Solve the gearbox issue and remote control key, and it would have been a great car

Faults:

Car occasionally goes on limp mode. Mechanic at Renault says due to low transmission oil level, after topping up, still happened, but less frequent.

If you don't go back to agent, you could save heaps on repairs and maintenance bill.

Remote control key suddenly didn't work, so can't deactivate the immobiliser and the car has to be towed. Replacement key took about 2 weeks to arrive and cost NZD400+ to replace, and the old key can't be programmed. Disappointed.

Aircon compressor leaks, maybe part of wear and tear.

Other than the above, satisfied with the rest.

General Comments:

Fuel consumption for city driving is pretty average, 10km to a litre, but on the highway (including some steep uphill), a surprising almost 14km to a litre.

2002 Renault Scenic

Summary:

Not suitable for Australian conditions

Faults:

Plenty.

Rear shocks went soon after purchase.

It threw fan belts off.

It threw the harmonic balancer off, which threw the timing belt off, which damaged valves and required a full top end re-build.

Rear top window once opened cannot be closed.

Gear box is not far away from dying; clunks badly, and is now starting to slip through the gears.

Engine runs always at a hot temperature, and the gear box also suffers badly under high temperatures.

General Comments:

At first you will love this car. Stylish and spacious interior with plenty of handy gadgets and features. But it is badly let down with high running and maintenance costs, and an unreliable motor and gearbox that doesn't suit Australian conditions, particularly our summer months.

2002 Renault Scenic Dynamique

Summary:

Unreliable

Faults:

Transmission - gone. Very expensive to repair. Problem with the computer. Timing belt - gone.

General Comments:

Consistently unreliable. Australia is terrible for Renaults in my experience.

Car is comfortable to drive and spacious, an attractive appearing family car, although always with problems, needs repairing. These cars are very temporary.

2003 Renault Scenic Dynamique 2.0DOHC

Summary:

Fantastic roomy car for work or family use

Faults:

Nothing car has worked well.

General Comments:

This is a great roomy car that I use for buisness and leisure. The safety is great with side and front air bags.

The partial leather seats are great and not to cold in winter.

Plenty of space in side for up to 5 adults.

Pretty good on fuel around town and on long trips.

Overall great car to own.

2003 Renault Scenic Expression 2.0 Litre 16v

Summary:

Brilliant

Faults:

We had a dodgy transmission solenoid replaced and a new motor installed for the automatic locking on the fuel flap within 1 month of getting the car. Apart from that, it runs like a dream.

General Comments:

We wanted a car with lots of internal room, that wasn't too big outside, had a 5 star safety rating, was very comfortable and we could use for long road trips with kids - and we got it. My wife is a new driver, and she loves this car. I have been driving for years, and also love it. It's smooth, quick, handles well, is a great ride height, perfect for kids in booster seats and has a fantastic stereo!!

2001 Renault Scenic Privilege 2 litre 16v

Summary:

A classy people mover which has redefined this range

Faults:

The ignition system was playing up when we first took delivery of the car. The dealer discovered the factory had set the wrong computer program for electronic ignition. This was easily corrected.

The dealer caused several scratches to the paintwork during services.

The cheap factory supplied battery failed exactly after 12 months (12 days after warranty).

Otherwise I can't fault the car. It seems like it would glide through another 250,000 kilometers without major repairs.

General Comments:

My wife loves this car. She can't speak highly enough about it, and I have trouble getting the keys from her. She despises the dealer and resents taking it to them (only 2 dealers in a city on 1 million).

Resale value seems to plummeting because Renault do not yet have the same profile in Australia as Japanese and other car makers.

I prefer a saloon seating position, but my wife loves the seating arrangement.

We bought the car when Renault had just made their re-entry into the Australian market. The Scenic shone brightly above our two other options (Mazda Premacy and Daewoo Tacuma - both copies of the Scenic).

It has been a fantastic value car - best around.

The motor purrs in all traffic and the car loves being driven hard - city or highway. It is a joy to drive. It is fully optioned with leather seats, stick control stereo etc. etc.

I agree there should be more Renault dealers in Australia if they are serious about the brand in Australia.
