1999 Subaru Outback 2.5 petrol

Summary:

Good ride, but horrendously expensive

Faults:

Starter motor replaced at 60,000km.

RH CV joint bellows blew at 65,000km.

LH CV joint bellows blew at 90,000km.

Rear privacy cover broke spring at 99,000km.

Replaced knock sensor at 104,000km.

Replaced engine temperature sensor and rear wiper motor pump at 105,000km.

Speedometer driven gear broken at 106,000km. This one takes the cake - in most cars, this can be replaced without disassembling the gearbox - with Subaru, the whole gearbox has to be torn down to replace a plastic gear!

General Comments:

Smooth ride, great for long distances, comfortable seats, however a massive money pit.

Bought the car based on good reliability reports, however would not purchase another Subaru again.

AU dealers are arrogant, very unhelpful, and charge like wounded bulls.

1999 Subaru Outback 2.25 petrol

Summary:

Pile of junk

Faults:

Everything went wrong!

Transmission replaced at 120k.

Control module at 125k.

Head replaced at 165000k.

Many ongoing electrical gremlins.

The door trims all came loose, and the rear plastic shroud on the tailgate fell off.

General Comments:

I hate it!! I was told how wonderful these things are, and how reliable the boxer should be.

We had this thing serviced on time every time at a Subaru dealer, drove it gently and never took it off the bitumen.

The slightest flick resulted in big dings in the bodywork. It spent 8 days back at the dealer with 2 months of acquiring it, and then was back a further 5 times for warranty repairs thereafter. I traced the original owners, who were a retired couple, who traded it as they had had no end of issues since they took delivery of it new.
