1987 Toyota Corolla CS 1.6

Summary:

I recommend Corollas as the are hard wearing and don't mind coping a beating

Faults:

I being a new driver didn't look after it properly at first. I had had it 6 months and it finally ran out of water and oil and it blew up. Due to my own fault. It cost me a bit to repair, but that was the only thing ever to go wrong with it.

No other brake downs although it did overheat quite badly. From the day I bought it, to the day I sold it. It would reach the orange section.

General Comments:

Other than having an over heating problem and the one blow up I used to drive 8 to 10 hours a day 7 days a week. Fuel consumption is extremely good I could get 400, 450 km's to a tank. Air conditioning worked fine as long as the car was not over heating and although it had sluggish days it generally was very good to drive.

The interior was comfortable and you could comfortably fit 4 large adults or 2 adults and three children in the car.

1987 Toyota Corolla AE82 Seca Twin Cam 16 1.6 petrol Fuel Injected

Summary:

The Fast and the Frugal

Faults:

I bought the Corolla cheap because it was long out of registration, had some rust, body damage, and no 3rd gear.

Since then I've fixed it up and use it as a daily driver.

The car has oil leaks and idle a bit high.

General Comments:

Best car I've bought yet!!!

For a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder this thing flies and there still isn't many cars with this sized engine and can produce this much power.

I've done several long distance trips in it and the car has done the trips with no problems and made the kilometres go by quickly.

Handling isn't too bad, could be a little better - nothing a set of wheels and sports suspension can't fix!

I'm planning to save up and put a supercharged corolla engine in to make it an even quicker car.

1987 Toyota Corolla CS 1.6

Summary:

A reliable car, but watch for rust!

Faults:

The guy who sold me the car (private sale) must have had the rust repaired. I have had lots of rust that has come through which I am currently fixing and not enjoying.

The main rust places have been under all doors, the boot is rusted out all around the window frame, and holes in the body work on the skirting under the back doors, but there are many more.

The drivers seat is saggy and I can see the foam is falling out underneath.

General Comments:

The corolla is a lot of fun, it's a quick car, but there is no overdrive on the auto which doesn't make sense. When I hit speeds of 100kms+ the car slows down a lot and struggles to go any faster.

My top speed is around 145km-160km, but that was on a looong straight and the car was veryyy loud!

Some times I have trouble starting the car early morning even with a new battery.

When I put my foot down the acceleration has a very late response.

I'm not sure if its normal, but the car always seems to be really hot even after services, being around 3/4 of the way up the heat dial.

The car is comfortable to drive, but there really is no leg room in the back, maybe for small children.

Having no power steering is a pain, its quite heavy to drive.

The CS has air con. and no blind spots which makes up for no power steering.

I think if I was gonna go for another corolla Id go for a twin cam. I doubt I would get another Corolla as they really are a boring car and not much to look at and need a lot of upgrades to be up there with other smaller cars.

The reason for rust is lack of maintence, it says in the owners manuals to clean out door drain holes so rust doesn't start.

1987 Toyota Corolla CS 1.6 carbi petrol

Summary:

A cheap, reliable, gutsy little run-a-bout

Faults:

I only had to replace 2 things when I purchased the car, they were the alternator and the fan belt.

The alternator I picked up from the wreckers and fitted my self, cost me $87 for that and 20 odd bucks for the belt.

The front drivers seat was very saggy, I didn't want to buy a new one so I just swapped the 2 front seats around.

General Comments:

The car is very reliable transport and I recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap first car (i paid $1350 for mine).

The only annoying thing with it is that the fan belt comes loose about every 100km, but I'm working on that.

Fuel economy, handling and comfort are 3 very good points about this car. No air con, power steering and left revision mirror are 3 bad points. The goods are great, the bads are minor.

As far as performance goes it's not bad for a 1.6. Passing other vehicles can be done quickly at 80km/h if you chuck it back to 3rd. Chucking it back to 4th does very little as 4th and 5th gear are very close together.

If you're looking at getting a cheap 2nd hand car you can't go past one of these beauties.

1987 Toyota Corolla CS 1.6 L

Summary:

An excellent car!

Faults:

When I first got my car there was nothing wrong with it, but I had to replace my battery after 1 month due to my 2 subs in the back.

It also crunches gears when going from 1st to 2nd, but I think that's because of the way I used to drive it.

General Comments:

It has a lot of room on the inside. I'm 6'3 and I have no problems at all.

It is very reliable and runs on the smell of an oily rag.
