2003 Toyota Troop Carrier 4.2 diesel
Summary:
A perfect off road camper with an amazingly quiet diesel engine and great air-con
Faults:
Only the wheel alignment, and I had that problem rectified by a really expert truck wheel alignment shop, and they did a great job of it.
General Comments:
My second diesel Troopy, and this one is better than the first as it is newer (2003). ex Innisfail Tafe college vehicle, so was maintained pretty good and had low mileage on it.
All was very good condition including all 11 seats when I purchased it for $33,000.
Have since had a compliance plate fitted after removing all rear seats. Sold all rear seats for $100, which paid for the compliance plate.
Have had made a complete draw camping configuration in the back which takes all of the space just about.
Had aluminium drawers made, to my design, and my wife came up with a brilliant idea of having a bench 'top' with accessable drawers at the side of the 'top', but the other 2 drawers are top access, and run on stainless steel rollers all done professionally, by a sheet metal mate. He's not made of sheet metal.
Cost me about $2,200 all up and we sleep on the top on a high density foam mattress of 75mm thickness.
Works very well, can carry everything we need for a 6 month trek and we don't have to tow anything. The only problem is that if it's raining, access to the back renders the bedding wet, unless one erects a tarpaulin.
About 14.2 ltrs/100klms, but I don't flog it.
It's everything you'd expect from a heavy duty light truck that has a lot of good quality steel and glass.
I found the suspension excellent on dirt or sealed roads and all round disc brakes are good even when towing boat down the Kuranda Range.
With a 180 ltr fuel capacity, we can travel 1200 klms without stopping, but you have 2 empty tanks by then so of course you have to fill up a lot sooner than that, but it gives you an entire day or 2 (when on a trip) of not having to stop for fuel all the time, like I had to in the 2004 dualcab Hilux.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes
