1988 Opel Kadett Caravan LS 1.3S

Summary:

Basic car for budget-oriented

Faults:

Needed to replace exhaust pipe, when it broke down.

Cabin ventilator stopped working.

A lot of rust in wheel casings and borders of doors. Also the bottom of the car was in bad condition.

Motor needed too much oil, it escaped through upper insulating strip.

Automatic choke worked occasionally.

General Comments:

The car was my first. It was most important that it worked, it was a car with big freight space.

It used very small amount of gas, after the fuel-air blend was tuned to use lower amount of fuel.

When driving the car, it feels sluggish, because the transmission is fine-tuned for low consumption in highway driving, the performance suffers significantly in city driving.

Interior was very ascetic, and it wasn't the most comfortable car to drive, although the steering was very sharp. But the creaks, squeak and low quality of manufacturing everywhere annoyed me.

The best part of the car was the cheapness of owning it, parts were cheap, technology of the car was old-fashioned (which was also its downside) and it used only 5 liters fuel for 100 km.

1990 Opel Kadett LS 1.3 Carb

Summary:

Definitely a good investment

Faults:

Rust spots showed up here and there.

The carburettor (Pierburg 2E3) developed some intermittent faults (pretty hard to locate).

General Comments:

Pros:

A good deal for a "my first car".

Handles very well.

Starts well, regardless of outdoors temperature.

Good fuel economy (6.2-7 l/100km).

Almost maintenance-free engine. Very quiet, too.

Cons:

Some carburettor problems (on carburettor models) are hard to locate and fix. Also, carb gives erratic cold engine idling.

Dieseling (running-on) seems quite frequent in these engines.

Dashboard and underneath elements develop a concerto of rattling noises.

1989 Opel Kadett LS 1.4i

Summary:

An excellent everyday car

Faults:

I've had only minor problems with the car.

Brakes have needed the most of my attention. They stick occassionally.

Sometimes the warning light for electricity is lit but there has never been a problem with electricity - in fact they work fine in any weather.

The doors and locks freeze when the temperature drops several centigrades to freezing (below zero) after rain. Greasing the mechanisms help.

General Comments:

Nice to drive.

Economic (normally 5,5 l/100 km on highway which beats even most more modern engines).

Extremely reliable all-around car. Starts always, even in -30 C temperature.

Roomy, especially the trunk.

Well designed cabin - plenty of places for small things, like mobile phone, parking disk, pens, etc.

1989 Opel Kadett LS 1.8i

Summary:

Nice car for summertime

Faults:

Rear brakes totally replaced at 230000 km.

Exhaust system replaced at 243000 km.

General Comments:

Reliable car in summertime.

Very economical car and cheap parts.

Nice performance, for a car of this type.

Very large trunk.

Soft, but still uncomfortable suspension.

Not a very good car at winter time. It starts usually well, but sometimes it is nearly impossible to get inside, because the doors and door locks freeze. I had to break a window once to get inside.
