1995 Peugeot 405 GTX Style 2.0i

Summary:

Nice car

Faults:

Only few kilometres have passed, and some bad noise from the front side of the car? Something with the springs I think?

General Comments:

Very low mileage, feels like the engine is still good shape.

Kind of a fast car this one, if you use the RPMs.

1992 Peugeot 405 Mi16 1.9 16v petrol

Summary:

Tons of faults, but very enjoyable to drive

Faults:

Rear brakes failed at 290 000.

Distributor failed at 290 000.

Clutch failed at 290 000.

Rear axle failed at 300 000, would cost me the price of the car, not worth it to repair.

Also doors won't lock/keep shut during winter, which is a pain.

General Comments:

Surprisingly comfortable when working. Also pretty decent acceleration, although the catalyst version is slightly slower than the non catalyst one. A very fun car to drive, but all the faults combined, it might not be worth it.

The clutch failed after ~290000 km and 17 years, my oh my. Also, the distribution, which normally is changed on this model every five years or 120000 km, also failed...

The car is not reliable for sure.

1988 Peugeot 405 SRi 1.9

Summary:

Ahead of its time, classic

Faults:

Electric window switch broke.

Rear breaks (disc) were stuck when I bought the car. (The car stopped with the front brakes only).

Peugeot has been so far a lot more reliable than Buick.

General Comments:

Very comfortable ride.

So far it has also been reliable.

Performance is surprising, 0-100km/h takes only 9.5s.

Fuel consumption is only 7.3 litres/100km on highway.

Overall very good car.

Peugeot 405 rear brakes do stick and sometimes get very hot!!! whats the best way to solve this??

23rd Nov 2005, 14:46

I've never looked at the rear discs on a 405 but I know on other makes if you disassemble the caliper and reassemble it with everything treated with copper-based grease, this should free up the caliper.

You might have to work the caliper a little to get it to free up without the spring in place.

1988 Peugeot 405 GR 1.9

Summary:

Faster than it looks

Faults:

Clutch wire snapped twice.

Boot floods.

Overheats sometimes when driving in city.

General Comments:

The car is quicker than most of the new 1.9 or 2.0 cars.

But the suspension is too soft.

Nothing big hasn't ever broke down, but the clutch wire snapped two times in a couple of months (fixed badly at the first time, the pedal didn't go all the way down anymore, replaced the whole wire when broke again and has worked perfectly ever since).

When leaving from traffic lights, even a Mi16 can't escape too badly, comes very close to it.

1990 Peugeot 405 mi16 1.9

Summary:

Very fast, beautiful, but choose carefully

Faults:

Ball joint on the driver's side was busted when I bought the car. Made a horrible noise and took out all fun from driving. Very easy and cheap to fix.

Both front wheel bearings were worn out and noisy, changed them. No biggie.

Power steering was sticky, changed the belt -> OK.

Engine mounts have worn too much, this needs to be fixed. Affects transmission and exhaust mountings (broken because the engine moves too much).

General Comments:

A very, very fast car. Still great looks after all these years, a true classic.

People seem to be afraid of old Mi16's, so they are cheap. Just check the car well before you buy it. Can have tedious electric problems, but the mechanics and chassis work. 405's don't rust.

I love the engine. My engine was overhauled completely at 300000 km. This is a pure race engine, it wakes up at 4000rpm and then it's pure joy.

If taken care of, this car is reliable. Interior is very comfortable and durable. But who cares. It handles well and it's fast. And it's a looker.

1990 Peugeot 405 GR 1.9

Summary:

Nice driving without lights

Faults:

Almost every electric thing is broken, or needs to be fixed. And if you try to fix electric things by yourself, this car will break more.

Central locking works only sometimes.

And manual locks don't work at all (inside, or outside).

Choke does not work at all.

Speedometer does not work.

Some synchronization problems with the transmission.

General Comments:

This car is pretty quick because of the 1.9 engine (110hp), but that's only good thing in it.

All electric things are from hell in this car.

I want a mi16... :)

1994 Peugeot 405 Break GLX 1.8 petrol

Faults:

Dashboard lights have burned out. Nothing serious. Lots of inside noise, meaning pops & crackles that come out of the interior. Otherwise a silent car.

General Comments:

Fantastic car. Big for a mid-sizer, great fuel economy, no rust whatsoever, great winter car for Finland's cold climate. I am the 3rd owner.

1990 Peugeot 405 GR 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Would be easier to tell the things that haven't gone wrong...

Speedo doesn't work.

Heater gone broken.

Rear axle is broken.

Cylinder head is broken.

Charger has busted about 4 times.

Rear lights gone berserk (disco lights).

Gearbox gets uppity with me.

Clutch pedal comes off every now and then.

Water comes thru roof (and if washed in machine, water comes thru everywhere).

Electrical problems (lights flash when engine running)...etc...etc...

General Comments:

Handles great! But that is the only good thing in the car...

405 GRI 1.6 1991, 378.000 km's without engine, gearbox, brake, electrical and so on problems.

The engine and gearbox have never been opened and also the charger and the other main parts are original.

The most driver friendly car I have owned since 1964. Altogether (8 cars) over 1.8 million kilometers, 95% in Finland.

I live in Belgium, have a 405 GR and the only thing that have gone wrong are the brake lights.

9th Aug 2001, 12:11

I live in england. I took my 1.9 gr auto to France for a day trip. I was quite tempted to leave it there!!!

Since I have had my GRI 405 I have never had any major problems except for once.I,unwillingly, took part in a chain crash and my headlights burst, but does that count...

Of course I change the oil every 9k km and the brakes. In conclusion, it's a great car and I would never trade it whatsoever... Have a nice driving, guys!
