2004 Audi A6 3.0 V6 TDI Quattro

Summary:

The NEW A6 3.0 Diesel Quattro

Faults:

Great so far!

General Comments:

I sometimes have the privilege of driving newer cars for an extended period of time. I did this with the 5-series, E-Class, and now the new Audi A6.

Firstly, it looks fantastic! It is a head turner wherever you go! Performance is great as well. The pick-up is smooth and fast, and the top speed that I reached was 254 km/h (even though the statistics said that it would not go further than 244 km/h). This is on the Germany Autobahn.

I am not so sure about the reliability, since I have only had this car for 5000km. I am sure that they have improved a lot from the previous model, but then again it just came into the market so there are properly several problems that will be uncovered at later stages.

The fuel consumption is tremendous! If, however, you use the cruise control on the highway you could get approximately 7 liters for 100 km.

I won't have the car much longer so I will post any update I may have in the meantime.

Interesting review, especially because you've driven the E class & series as well. Any comments on preferences? Would be very useful for me as I'm considering all three for my next car purchase.

Sorry for not commenting sooner - I haven't checked out my reviews for quite some time.

The E-class has a very clunky transmission - not as smooth as previous models and definitely not as smooth as the A6. I drove the E220 CDI so pick-up wasn't as great as the A6 either.

The BMW 5 series is a great car - the ultimate driving machine for sure. However, the interior leaves a lot to be desired and feel as though the A6 is very strong in that aspect.

I hope you chose the right car!

Whatever you buy, make sure it's got a TURBO, otherwise you won't be able to remap the ECU to get a lot more BHP and torque. -A56 Driver.

Summary:

Comfy economic long distance runner

Faults:

There were a few problems that were related to the Audi dealer's maintenance.

Lost the left indicators (twice) at high speed because they were not properly fixed.

Experienced increasing vibrations during a nightly ride on the Autobahn. Suspected failure of the wheel bearings, but apparently one of the front wheels was loose, all of which occurred after servicing the front disc brakes (Sic!).

Replacement of one of the nine bulbs in the dashboard required the dismantling of the steering wheel, the disconnection of the airbag unit and some other minor parts - this is too complicated as bulbs may always fail.

However the free Audi breakdown service was excellent in curing the problem and the garage tried everything to rule out the problems.

Oil consumption nearly nil during service intervals.

General Comments:

Very comfortable and economic long distance runner. Taking into account the empty weight of 1700 kg and the automatic gearbox, fuel consumption of about 7.5 litres/100 km at 150 kph with the air conditioning engaged is reasonable.

Large, spacious interior.
