1991 Peugeot 405 GRD 1.9 diesel
Summary:
All in all a nice car, reliable, economical (IMHO well built and robust)
Faults:
The timing belt and the water pump were replaced at 180.000 km.
The tachometer is working intermittently.
The cover for luggage compartment is making strange rattling noise.
General Comments:
During the time when we were building our house, I broke our Volvo 740.
So we needed a cheap family car.
It should be cheap to run... and I should be able to transport bulky things in the car...
The car is incredibly cheap to maintain. Fuel consumption is an average of 5.2l/100km - 54 mpg (I was able to achieve 4.8l/100 - 58 mpg on the way to Ebeltoft DK).
Has enough place for transporting bulky things (cannot be compared to the Volvo 740 estate).
Seats are comfortable (quite often the case with French cars).
The car grips to the road but it is definitely lacking power... I own the diesel version without turbo (I wanted one without turbo due to the easier/cheaper maintenance).
The car does its 150 km/h on motorways though.
In Germany the tax for diesel cars is high (even though the car has a catalytic converter) and not every shop is willing to fix a Peugeot!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Timing belt has to be replaced at 120000 km. You had luck it did not break before the replacement at 180000 km. Changing this belt is normal.
