2000 Volkswagen Golf Generation 1.6

Summary:

Could be better

Faults:

The car looks great and handles well, but the engine is very small and it gives you the feeling that the car is too heavy, and it needs to go on a diet.

Other problem; the acceleration is dead, the kickdown doesn't work most of the times; when you climb a hill, it just dies. Problem with the transmission; it always slides between 3 and 4 gears, which gives it an uncomfortable ride.

General Comments:

It looks great, it has a lot of accessories, but the engine is too slow, and the automatic gear box is bad, but no electric or engine problems.

Another problem is that it loves to drink a lot of fuel compared to other 1.6s. We have an Acura with a 2.4, and its more economic than the Golf, but girls like it.

It's well built; the materials inside are better than any car in this category.

It's good for a woman who needs to pick up her kids, but not for performance on the road.

2001 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline 2.0

Summary:

Don't touch this car

Faults:

The front windows dropped 2 times (there was a recall, but only for the front)

The gearbox started to make noise after 6 months and was sent to be repaired, but the problem keeps coming back from time to time.

The right front bumper had a problem that had to be fixed.

General Comments:

It's a comfortable car and have a great air conditioning, but other than that - it's a crappy Golf and gives Volkswagen a bad name.

The dealer never admitted of the gearbox problem, the front windows were replaced, but he said that the problem is only with the front.

2000 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.8 turbo

Summary:

High quality/high performance German bargain

Faults:

1. Noise from the front suspension/wheels. From the first day I have had the car, I've heard a wierd noise from the front wheels and suspension. The dealer said it's nothing, but I hear the noise all day, especially when taking fast turns and starting on a hill.

2. Front wheels always slip/spin. The car has a lot of power, and is front wheel drive. VW should have put in a traction control system. Drivers cannot use the car's full power otherwise the wheels spin.

General Comments:

Awesome German handling and power.

Best deal for the money.

Great car, with some desigh flaws VW needs to recall and fix ASAP!

Wheel spin? Your car should have traction control fitted as standard like my 1999 model.

Its obviously an import, and you are paying the price with no TCS...

You said you heard a weird noise? Could the weird noise possibly be the turbo? Most cars that are turbocharged have that "weird noise"
