2002 Proton Perdana

Summary:

Excellent in its class

Faults:

There were some jerks when I slowed down at junction, but my foreman advised that I should turn off the overdrive when I am going to stop or going below 60km.

And it worked, no jerks!

General Comments:

The car is comfortable!

I drove from Pen to Kul with a full load with a average speed of 120-140km, and it only cost me 50myr; better mileage than my Wira 1.5A.

1997 Proton Perdana 2.0 4 cylinder

Summary:

Obsolete model, but cheap to own in Malaysia

Faults:

Gearbox failed at 110,000km.

Seats coming apart.

Standard battery only lasts 1 year because of position at front, must use sealed battery.

General Comments:

Early models are better built than recent examples.

Very economical for a 2L, I get 11 km/l.

Poor safety features for a fast car.

No ABS, but brakes are actually very good.

Headlights are weak.

1999 Proton Perdana 2.0 SEi 2.0

Summary:

Good

Faults:

Air conditioner compressor needed replacement after 85,000 km due to water entry.

General Comments:

A comfortable and capable long distance cruiser which is good for town use as well. Car was a well priced 2.0 litre executive vehicle. Looks were a little dated and boring however reliability was never questionable and handling was acceptable. Car can reach a maximum speed of 197 km/h but is a little floaty at high speeds. Handling on curves isn't a strong point but the car was not meant for high speed slaloms anyway. Comfort was good and interior was well kitted though a little plasticky. After 5 years and 110,000km, car only lost 18% of it's value on trading in. Overall, a very favourable impression of the car.

2001 Proton Perdana

Summary:

An average car

Faults:

The gear " jerk " when you going from low to higher gear.

There is a air leak from the driver side window when you reach 100 kph. Done many including changing of the rubber, but it still remain the same.

General Comments:

The car is good (for its pricing) in general except the gear problem. The handling and pick up is better then the WAJA. However, looks like the WAJA is more stable when you are at 140kmh and above.

On the safety side, it is not acceptable when it not even have airbag, considering the tp speed can be above 200kmh.

2003 Proton Perdana V6 2.0i 2.0i V6

Summary:

Value for money if and only if problems inherent in transmission and suspension are rectified.

Faults:

Transmission is disappointing. On several occasions (at 11 months old), gear "D" and "2" didn't work. Had to go for the "L" to move the car, before could switch to the "2" and "D".

Transmission produces jerk when changing gear.

Vibration felt too early. Don't know what the cause is, but think that from engine mounting (it is possible?). At the speed 110 km/h and above, vibration felt coming from the front cigarette ashtray and right-hand air-condition hole.

Think that suspension has deteriorated so fast. Can feel significant difference driving off from showroom and present.

General Comments:

Power is acceptable.

Ergonomics.

Economical.

Sounds like a batch problem. I have the same car minus the alleged problems. :-)

2000 Proton Perdana PV6 2.0 V6

Summary:

Value for money for the price range

Faults:

No major overhauls.

General Comments:

Final comment for this PV6 is: For those who comment that the PV6 is old technology. You are lucky that your get the top of the line tech in the late 90s, not some reject tech from the 80s. If you still want fancy tech for your car, Yes go for the BMW where you get all the fancy tech. It good, not bad at all. But is just you are paying for R & D cost now. Thank you.
