2005 Renault Megane EX 1.5 CDi turbo diesel (100bhp)

Summary:

A comfortable, safe, economical car, good value for money

Faults:

None.

The only problem I've got is that when I open the boot, the parcel shelf gets detached out of place, and the dealer is going to set the rear seat, and solve the problem under warranty.

General Comments:

It is a very comfortable car, rides well and handles well, although the steering is too light at slow speeds, and is a bit slow to react from one corner to another.

Because the Megane is a car set up with comfort in mind, perhaps it's not as rewarding to drive as a Focus, but it's really safe, and as the speed increases, the steering becomes firm and the car rides better, and on our 'moon terrain' roads, it's smooth and stable.

It has a light clutch and smooth gear change.

Refinement is also good, and its quality materials and soft suspension give a very smooth ride and soft damping.

It's also spacious and very practical, and the build quality is very good.

Economy is really impressive; more than 65 miles per gallon on the combined cycle.

The engine is smooth and strong.

And finally it is the safest car in its class; well done Renault.

2003 Renault Megane Hatchback (Authentique) 1.5 DCI

Summary:

I give my Renault Megane top marks for economy, safety and looks, but zero marks for workmanship

Faults:

1. Electric window winder (driver's side) malfunction after 13 months.

2. Gearbox transmission malfunction after 14 months (8000 km)

3. Electrical malfunction after 15 months (battery short-circuited)

4. Leaking engine compression after 22 months (16,000 km)

5. Windshield shattered when hit by small stone whilst driving (18,000 km)

6. Handbrake plastic handle broken and handbrake cannot be engaged. To change the plastic cover I have to replace the whole handbrake mechanism (2 years, 19,000 km).

7. Air-conditioner water drained into both floor storage compartments (2 years, 19,000 km)

General Comments:

1. In just one year of Renault ownership I have experienced more problems than I have had in over 40 years of owning other cars (6 different models of Volkswagen,Toyota, Alfa Romeo and Fiat)

I own a Megane 1.4 16v Authentique. It appears to have had 5 owners prior to me, and FORTY SEVEN warranty claims since Jan 2003, and yes it is still faulty.

1. Handbrake plastic handle broken and handbrake cannot be engaged - I have the exact same problem, was quoted £250 to get the problem fixed!!!

1996 Renault Megane RT 1.4 petrol

Summary:

A car worth buying!

Faults:

When I first purchased my car, I had found difficulty engaging the first gear, but now it isn't a problem any more.

Five months after I bought it, rust started appearing at the edge of the rear windscreen.

General Comments:

It's a great car though, with excellent interiors, road holding, excellent audio and comfortable seating position.

This car has fair acceleration and handles very well even at 140km per hour.
