1996 Opel Vectra CD 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Nice looks, great driving

Faults:

Engine sensor failure which resulted in an emergency computer-program selection.

Broken spring.

Engine runs troublesome when stationary due to a sticky EGR valve especially when Airco is running (problem not yet solved).

Broken stationairy electrical drive which resulted in an engine stall.

General Comments:

Although I have had some problems I really enjoy driving this car.

This black sedan is on of the most beautiful car Opel ever made.

His acceleration is not spectacular in the rpm low range, but really improves at 3000 - 4000 rpm.

Driving 120 km/h at 3000 rpm is very comfortable.

It's average fuel-usage over the past two years is 1:12 (12 km at 1 liter fuel). That's not bad for a 2.0 liter engine.

You don't need a sound amplifier. Opel's speaker-system is outstanding.

1991 Opel Vectra GT 1.8i

Summary:

Reliable, economic Grand Tourism

Faults:

Nothing really. The former owner really loved this car. All the maintenance was done perfectly. That's why it's not unsafe to buy a car with a lot of kilometres, if the maintenance is not neglected.

Okay, my battery died after two weeks, but that's it.

General Comments:

The car is equipped with an 1.8i engine. That's enough (especially with the close-ratio sports gear), but the 2.0i is better.

The car was bought with full options: powered mirrors, powered windows, Billstein suspension, etc. etc.

After more than 200.000kms, this car still runs very nice. A little bit of rust found its way to the well-known spots.

It makes a difference if you buy a GT with or without history. My car's history goes back until 1995.

1991 Opel Vectra GT 1.8i

Summary:

Nice Grand Tourism for little money

Faults:

Nothing yet. Was completely serviced when I purchased the car.

General Comments:

Nice, sporty and comfortable car.

Full of nice options (powered windows and mirrors, door lock, Recaro seats, CD-player, etc.).

The close-ratio gear box makes this 1.8i faster than 'normal' 1.8i models.

Not a wild design, but this one was serviced very good and it's just fun for not too much money.

1988 Opel Vectra CD 1.8 S

Summary:

Don't pay too much... there are better deals!

Faults:

Due to high kilometres, some irritating stuff like motor management computer (sometimes 3500 min-1 with a cold engine without touching anything).

Clutch cable broke in Brussels, 130kms from home.

Very weak chair construction. Although most luxurious seats, I felt something metal in my back (probably because of 'big' previous owner).

Problems with foglights in front. On/off on their own decision.

High oil consumption and oil smell in the interior. Blue exhaust clouds.

Several 'small' petrol leaks.

Powered window left lived a life of its own.

Cracks in dashboard, making a noise in warm weather.

Water in interior due to leaks because of a rusty front window.

Gearbox almost dead (making interesting sounds).

I payed a lot (too much) for this car, so then these things matter more!

General Comments:

I owned this car just for some five months. Rust and technical injuries gave me a signal this car would be a problem even more in the near future.

But overall this Vectra didn't drink too much petrol; didn't make too much noise at constant speed and was well provided with options (of which half had malfunctions).

But high mileage/kilometres and unknown previous ownership/maintenance should make you decide to try something else. That it's an anonymous car you know in advance. Bet older Asconas (Cavaliers) are of better (simpler) quality!

Buy the Vauxhall version, they're far better.

1993 Opel Vectra GL 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Great car, drives better than the newer Vectra's

Faults:

Water coolantpump broke down.

Two wires in the rear window heater broken down.

Outside mirror once broke from the car.

General Comments:

Never broke down. Now starting problems. No rust problems.

Very reliable car but not much luxury.

Front seats are a bit too tough especially on long rides. It actually drives better than the newer Vectra ('95).

It just wouldn't die.

We sold the car at 450.000 km.

Still running without any problem, never opened the engine.

Used it for 12 years, only having the carb. fixed for 4-5 times.

I was really sad to sell it.

1998 Opel Vectra Pearl Stationwagon 1.6 16 valve petrol

Faults:

Until now no problems at all. But is is a very young car with only 25000 km. The car makes a very solid impression.

General Comments:

Nice, comfortable car with good ride and steering. On the motorway it's very stable, even at high speed (170-180 km/h) and with heavy wind. It doesn't have any real flaws. The engine runs smooth but lacks power under 3000 revs, I wouldn't advise this engine for pulling a caravan. What I would advise is airconditioning.

It's certainly not overpriced and is very effective. Fuel consumption is agreeable, about 9-10 L per 100 km in town to 7-8 L per 100 km on the motorway. The stationwagon has less space than most similar sized cars, but is large enough for me, my wife and two kids. And it is the most beautiful Opel you can buy at the moment.
