1988 Acura Legend LS V6

Summary:

WOW!

Faults:

Alternator.

Battery.

Starter relay.

General Comments:

Wow, what a car... Kept noticing it in my neighbor's garage, and finally asked him about it. He told me he bought it new and boasted how it was designed by NASA. I asked why he wasn't driving it. He said the ABS light was on and the windshield was cracked. He bought a new Civic Hybrid and was not driving the Acura. I needed a commute car, because my SUV at the time was getting 17 mpg. And long story short, he sold it to me for $300.00.

My neighbor kept all the service records. This car still has the same engine, transmission and clutch at 256,000 miles! I saw a guy with my same exact car the other day, and boasted to him how I had 256K miles. He said, "that's nothing, mine has 430k on it."

The ABS light was on due to the alternator being bad. I bought a new windshield and cloth interior (leather was shot) off Craig's list for $200.00.

I get 25 mpg, drive it to work 70 miles round trip at an average of 80 mile per hour. What a car! The on-board computer is great. People keep knocking on my door asking if I want to sell it!

1988 Acura Legend LS 2.7 V6

Summary:

Acura makes one hell of a good product

Faults:

The car overheated but was due to a mechanic using non acura parts, some simple rewiring and bleeding of the cooling system... the car has a leak in the cooling system requiring me to constantly add fluid, the gas gauge is stuck... the SRS and Antilock brake lights are always on, other than that, nothing.

General Comments:

It does make a clacking sound, assuming it's a valve issue, but hasn't hindered the car's performance at all.

1988 Acura Legend Standard 2.7L V6 24-valve 2700 PGM-FI

Summary:

Beautifully Reliable!

Faults:

Basic maintenance was all that was required.

New fuel line and plugs.

General Comments:

I have owned this car since April of '07. Seven thousand miles later, and it is still performing beautifully.

For as old as it is, the fuel efficiency is still very close to what it was back in 1988, give or take a mile or two per gallon.

Sometimes you are lucky and choose a great car that far exceeds your expectations.

Sometimes you buy yourself a worthless lemon.

Even though the comparisons made by people having this same car differ greatly, you must keep in mind that the comments being made are merely a judgment of how the car works now. A multitude of factors such as how it was driven, how often the oil was changed, whether the previous owner took care of the vehicle properly, and a variety of other key points, all become a result of how you view this car right now.

Think about it; when this car was new in 1988, it was perfect. What happened to the car from then until now is the ultimate result of how it looks, feels, and performs for you today.

1988 Acura Legend Base 2.7L Gasoline

Summary:

Truly amazing

Faults:

Had a clogged radiator when I bought it, replaced it for 100 bucks (2 hour job).

Put new CV joints in the front to make it ride batter and stop the clicking.

Replaced the brake pads.

Needed a new Fuel relay, 75 bucks 20 minute job.

Basic maintenance...

General Comments:

I love this car and wish I could buy it back from the guy I sold it too. Most reliable car on the road and it really earns it's name. Even for being a 1988 car it was so far ahead of it's time. I just bought a 1990 Legend LS that has more bells and whistles than the Cadillacs have. The new one has 275,000 miles on it and still runs strong with plenty of gitty-up. I would recommend this car to anyone.
