2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Base 2.0L turbo gasoline

Summary:

The Perfect Sports Sedan!

Faults:

Nothing. Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this wonderful car!

General Comments:

This car is everything I was hoping it would be. I have a rare color... the Monza Red and base model trim. But I have to say that I don't even care because it is such a great looking car from any angle, handles beautifully, has easy-to-understand controls, makes a great sound, and is unique. Alfas have always been a little quirky and this car might not be as quirky as previously-owned models, but I don't care! I love this car!

The chassis is absolutely perfect... zero flex. It is rock solid and sporty without being harsh. I leave it in "dynamic" mode all of the time and frequently use the auto-stick gear shifter.

It gets great gas mileage, too! The only car I would ever even think about replacing it with would be an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrofogli!

This is a brilliant sports sedan.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q4 2.0L twin turbo

Summary:

A gorgeous, refined, athletic and precise sport sedan

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

This is my second Giulia; my 2017 prior also had no serious issues, just some recalls that required software updates.

General Comments:

This is my second Alfa, traded in from a 2017 Giulia RWD. I loved the 2017 and the improvements to the 2020 were appealing four years after I bought one of the first Giulias off the boat stateside.

This car is an absolute joy to drive. Driving experience is second to none; it absolutely outperformed the BMW 3 series I test drove as a direct competitor... but also cost thousands less!

The best parts of the 2017 are still here... gorgeous exterior styling, taut and precise handling, a sporty ride that doesn’t bust your kidneys over bumps in the road, an exceptional view of the road ahead and a tight jewel-box feel absent of any squeaks or rattles.

The car is absolutely planted to the road and the driving experience is absolutely spectacular. I cannot say enough good things about FCA’s work in the driver experience.

For 2020, the interior received a freshening. The basic entertainment screen was kept as an eight inch unit integrated into the dash, but upgraded to a touchscreen and with CarPlay and Android Auto standard. It seems snappier in use. Alfa also kept the rotary dial to interface, but it seems a little more robustly constructed than in the 2017.

The console is built thicker, adds a more comfortable armrest and a cleverly designed niche for your smartphone with room to connect it to the entertainment system via a cable (hidden out of sight.) It also has built in Qi wireless charging for your iPhone or Samsung.

The steering wheel is thicker and still feels great in the hand.

Those little interior changes make the car feel a mite more premium, but you’d have to look closely if you weren’t familiar with the prior Giulia to notice them.

Go to your Alfa dealer. Test drive one. Put it in dynamic mode and try to wipe the grin off your face when you’re finished. It will be hard to!

I wonder if the superlatives in this review are realistic or are more of a subjective view of the owner. After all, it's all a matter of taste and comparison with the previous cars owned. That said, I've seen a Giulia in a parking lot, red color. Without a doubt, the exterior design of these cars stands out by a distance when compared to the competition. No other mass production affordable sedans come close to the exterior design of an Alfa Romeo. However, I was not impressed by the looks of the interior. The dashboard and the instrument panel behind the steering wheel did not impress me. These are too 'average' without character and without standing out of the average 'luxury' sedan interiors. It is disappointing knowing that the exterior designers did such a distinctive job. Italians have always been the best in industrial design, since many decades ago. The Italian interiors from the 60's through 80's were so simple yet so nice and with character.
