1988 Audi 80 2.0

Summary:

Great car for what I payed, lots of potential

Faults:

I bought the car for a hundred dollars with the understanding that it had a blown engine. As it turns out, the engine was fine. Still to replace are the exhaust, water pump, and shocks.

General Comments:

I have only had the car for about 2 months, and in that time including the cost of the car I have payed about 200 dollars. I have saved myself tons of money by doing the work myself. All said and done I should have this car in very good working condition for well under a thousand dollars. I was dead set against European cars before I got this car, but I have since changed my tune. It's a pleasure to work on and a pleasure to drive.

1990 Audi 80 Quattro 5 cylinder. 10 V

Summary:

A classic four wheel drive small luxury sport sedan

Faults:

I have replaced the master brake cylinder.

The starter has been replaced.

Both radiators have been replaced.

The rear struts and strut mounts have been replaced.

General Comments:

While not quick off the line, this car handles beautifully.

The Quattro feature comes in very handy up here in Maine as do the heated seats and ski-sock pass-through.

The styling has held up well over the years. Although now over twelve years old, its looks are not all that dated.

I will like to know what the P (red) in the dashboard stands for? As I was driving it came on.

1988 Audi 80 2.0L 4-cylinder

Summary:

Can't go wrong for $400

Faults:

Replaced the front struts.

Replaced the exhaust system.

Had to fix an electrical problem before it would run.

A few minor wiring problems throughout the car, don't know how to fix (trunk light, glove box light, front passenger window control light, etc.).

General Comments:

I love this car. My dad got it for me because he owns a wrecking yard and bought it for $400. It's not the best car ever, but you can't go wrong for such a low cost. He had to get it running and replace a few things, but it runs fine now. Still won't pass DEQ, but oh well.

It has power everything, which is really nice compared to my old Volvo which had power steering, brakes, and locks, which wasn't much help. I'm a little too used to rear-wheel drive though, so every once in a while I oversteer.

Lastly, the performance is so so. With just me in the car driving around, I feel like I'm in a sports car. But get a friend or two in there and the weight really bogs down the performance. I wasn't expecting incredible speed from this car, but I also didn't think the drop-off would be so severe.

Since you've got the 3-speed automatic, make sure you get the tranny and the diff properly serviced, there's an inherent fault where the seals between them perish and the diff fluid goes to the tranny and runs the diff dry. Very expensive to fix. Later 4-speed autos are immune from this, but it didn't kick in unti '92.

1990 Audi 80 Quattro 2.3 L SOHC 5 cylinder

Summary:

Reliable, solid, and safety combined with a pleasurable drive!

Faults:

It starts kind of hard sometimes, and still have not fixed the problem yet, but after it is warmed up the performance is better, smoother. I gave it a tune up but it may need plug wires.

Very nice car.

General Comments:

It handles very well, and comfortable, but not as much head room as my 4000 Quattro. I am 6' 3", does anyone have a '87 4000 Quattro for sale with heated seats, part trade for mine?

1992 Audi 80 2.3L 5 cylinder

Summary:

A tribute to German engineering

Faults:

Air conditioner compressor clutch needed to be replaced, otherwise *very* reliable and cheap car to maintain.

General Comments:

Excellent car -- German engineering really shows with this car. The five-cylinder engine with four speed automatic transmission is great! ABS brakes, drivers air bag, and other features make it a safe and comfortable car to drive. Air conditioning is great -- I never had it in a car before. I can't believe I drove a Hyundai Excel for two years!!!
