1997 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T

Summary:

Reliable, comfortable, good durability

Faults:

Radiator - 152K miles

Motor mounts - 145K

Control arms - 100K

Wheel bearings - all 4 from 90K to 140K

Cam tensioner seal oil leak - 80K

Turbo waste gate rod - 50K.

General Comments:

After 156K miles the car is still very solid, and none can believe it's 12 years old - no rust after living in MI all these years. It's very comfortable to drive, and the visibility is great. I like the turbo power, and it's been chipped with APR stage 2 for the last 100K miles.

Watch out of sunroofs, they have plastic parts that break- mine broke last year. I do my own work on the car, and haven't taken it to a mechanic in years.

For the past 3 years I replaced a wheel bearing every fall, and also last fall I did the radiator. We have no hesitation taking this car on long trips.

The only thing that bothers me is the 2nd gear syncro is getting weak. Once I've driven a few miles it's OK.

I have no want for a new car other than higher safety. The car is still fun to drive. I do wish it was quieter on the highway, but the Borla exhaust is mostly to blame for that.

1997 Audi A4 2.8

Summary:

I fell in love, and she cheated on me

Faults:

Gaskets of all kinds, and axles.

So I'm guessing the guy before me treated the car like crap.

Ever since then I have had starting problems, and a catalytic converter went out.

General Comments:

I'm crying on the inside, but I still love my car through and through.

1997 Audi A4 1.8T 1.8 turbo gas

Summary:

Drive it hard, it likes it!

Faults:

Typical items with the suspension, boot covers, window switches, engine mount, and recently the instrument cluster has failed - rpm and gas gauges work, everything else is out - a new cluster is $800 U.S. plus labor. No thanks, I'll just stay with traffic.

I changed the TB at 71k miles and will change it again soon.

General Comments:

My dealer experience has been crap. But, the car has been fantastic. It's faster than my Mitsu Eclipse GSX, handles better, and is much better built. I've beat the car to crap with autocross and daily WOT and hard corners (and drifts!).

I chipped the engine at 24k miles, full exhaust, shocks and springs. I still get comps on the car.

1997 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8

Summary:

Excellent but expensive to maintain

Faults:

Great ride. Smooth trans. Comfy and All.

Lil things have cost me dearly.

Had to do timing belt and serpetine ($1400).

Rear seals leaked ($350).

Front control arms. Replaced several of them ($900).

Cleaned out coolant due to dirt and had to flush my brake pads.

Have had the car for about 5 months or so. Great and reliable. Expensive in maintenance.

Gas mileage still at factory standard.

Wear on driver seat. Minimal. Bought a leather cover for it.

Currently needing to replace top control arm for left front wheel.

Needing to do a entire tune-up and minor oil leak.

I might buy another Audi but has to be under warranty.

For those of you looking for old Audis, things to check are, dirt in coolant, noise in suspension, squeaking at sharp angles, knocking in front wheels, rough idle speed. All this could prevent you from incurring some major losses.

Make sure the timing belt is done.

I have also had some few fuses go. That's kinda normal if you replace the fuse and they work... else that might indicate electrical trouble.

1997 Audi A4 1.8 turbo

Faults:

The timing belt broke mid drive, causing the engine to seize.

Coolant system replaced.

Water pump replaced.

Battery and other regular maintenance.

General Comments:

I really do like driving this car, it is on the affordable side in purchase price.

The maintenance can get expensive if you go to the dealership, and don't get your parts for cost.

I do have to say that the engine and any other problems that were caused by the timing belt tearing were fixed at no cost to me, otherwise I would have junked the thing. This service was done by the dealer who took almost three weeks to fix it; hey, I had a loaner for the time, so whatever. But my problems are not really with the car, but rather with the service department of the local dealership. They once told me that they could not figure out what was wrong with the car, because it couldn't go above 65mph. Duh, there's your problem.
