1997 Audi A6 Avant Quattro 2.8

Summary:

I like the firm, tight ride and quick braking

Faults:

Instrument cluster lights & "check engine" light has come on intermittently since I've owned the car. Dash lights have burnt out & guages have worked intermittently: oil pressure, & temperature. Since about 130K miles, we have had some intermittent problems with the cruise & A/C.

My spouse feels that the brakes have been expensive for this vehicle, but that they work beautifully. My first set of brakes was replaced under warranty at 50K miles.

Timing belt was replaced at 100K, and it was expensive (about $1200, not at the dealer).

Both front CV joints are now going (about $550.00 but not at Audi dealer).

General Comments:

Overall I adore the ride, the handling, the comforts, sound system, security, comfort and power everything settings (saves all driver's seat positions).

The car would be quicker with a V8, but it is really only slow with the A/C on full blast.

The Quattro is the only way to get there on time in the snow, it works like a dream.

1997 Audi A6

Summary:

Way too many problems!!!

Faults:

After one week of owning my A6, the heated seats started to melt the leather on the drivers side. Audi said it would cost around 2,000 to replace.

Then the coolant light came on and I was told it needed a new water pump. I also decided to change the timing belt since it hadn't been done. This first repair cost 1,300.

Then two weeks later I started to smell a burning scent, like burning rubber, also the brake light came on. I was told there was an oil leak. This repair was 1,300 once again.

Also when I went to pick the car up and pay, I was told they found another 500.00 worth of work. I guess it was a right front guide link.

To make a long story short I HATE the car! Yes, it looks nice, but it's not reliable at all. Why are Audi's great cars if they always have expensive problems? I'll stick to Toyota's from now on. There's no one I need to impress that bad.

Before buying a car you should get it checked out and inspected first. I am an Audi technician and love these cars.

Other than the heated seat burning the leather, everything else you said you had to change are categorized as wear and tear item. Considering the car is already 13 years old, the work you had to do is considered very minor. You could do a lot worse with other brands.

Thanks for your attention.

I am serious about buying a 1997 Audi A6 Quattro.

It has 26000 miles on it and a one owner, no winters, snow or salt.

Always in a garage, and it appears to be in beautiful condition.

All components including tires are original. It has the Bose system.

What if any are the concerns with the low mileage versus the age? It has sat for most winters in a family garage.

Again thank you for any comments you may have.

The asking price is 10000.00 USD.

1997 Audi A6 quattro 2.8L

Summary:

This is a great car I would recommend to anyone

Faults:

Replaced water pump and timing belt at 100,000 miles.

The front drivers side CV joint needs to be replaced at 128,000 miles.

Cover to the sunroof switch falls down almost daily.

General Comments:

This car is a very smooth ride.

It is not very fast off the line, but has all the top end power you will need.

Great highway cruiser.

Repair costs are a little high, but the car is worth the investment.

Over all the car is far superior to my previous Camry.

Update: 5/8/2009 163,000 miles.

Transmission control module replaced at 150K miles.

Front control arm bushings 160K mile's.

This car still runs and drives great, the engine is starting to show its age. The power steering pump whines and the car burns a little oil. For a 12 year old car it has held up great, however there is some surface rust starting, which is not surprising as it is in northern NY. Currently looking for a replacement, and may keep the A6 as a winter car.
