2000 Audi A6 4.2 V8

Summary:

Beauty, but unreliable and expensive to maintain and therefore would not buy this brand again

Faults:

Since I have owned the car- 1 year 10K miles the mass air flow and O2 sensors had to replaced for $1953.

And now the thermostat has failed replacement cost $1000.

I have the records from Audi where the previous owner had the same problem in addition to blown head gasket with the timing belt and water pump needing replacement $5440.

Cooling Fan Control module $486.

General Comments:

This car and Audi brand is very expensive to maintain and the reliability is very poor. I have bought Audi's for 20 years, but after my recent experience would not recommend these cars.

The car is beautiful, handles well, ride is too rough for my liking with sport suspension unless going over 75 mph. It is tuned for the autobahn not US highways.

If you've had Audis before, you cannot generalise for the whole batch. You have purchased the most expensive, most complicated A6 in the line-up, which if it does go wrong, will be indeed expensive to fix. I deliberately chose the simplest model in the range which adequately meets my needs -- no turbo, no quattro, and if I had a choice (it was second-hand) I'd prefer a manual to an automatic. My A4 1.8E is now almost 10 years old, has the odd problem here and there, but is simple and inexpensive enough to fix. Cars outside North America may appear to be sparsely equipped and have lower-power variants, but it lets us have much of the cake and eat it too -- durability, comfort, handling, and reasonable reliability.

I also own a 2000 A6 4.2. While it is expensive, the prices you are quoting are very high. Before I bought my Audi, I spent a lot of time finding the right mechanic. We work as a team when maintenance or repairs are needed. I do a lot of research as well. The Audiworld forums at Audiworld.com are a huge source of information. I would not own an Audi without them as a reference. The Audi is a great machine, but it is an interactive one. Get a Lexus if you just want to turn the key and go. Nothing wrong with that, but the driving experience is different.

I too, own a 2000 A6. I have had nothing but issues with this car. I love this car, but the cost of ownership is too high for the enjoyment value.

I dropped $2000 into it right after purchase and now the check engine light is telling me that either the cat is bad or all the oxygen sensors need to go.

If I get another Audi, which I might, I'll get one under warranty.

I would completely agree that the prices you quoted are FAR too high. I hope you are not being taken-for; compare to other dealers around town or a local Audi shop that knows what they are doing.

2000 Audi A6 Q 4.2

Summary:

Not what I expected from Audi

Faults:

The transmission started to "jolt" when downshifting.

Needed some oil after only 2000 miles.

General Comments:

The car has a nice interior and it's comfortable to ride in.

The sunroof is too loud when it's open.

Audi mechanics are rude and condecending. They have a long way to go on their customer service skills.

Customer Service is also very rude.

2000 Audi A6 2.6 Quattro

Faults:

Transmission bangs into high gear when decelerating. Once car is shut off, trans is OK again. Sounds similar to the problem mentioned earlier. Car has only 50k and runs otherwise ok. Miles are all highway and never abused.
