1989 BMW 5 Series i 2.5

Summary:

Wahrer Fahrvergnuegen!

Faults:

Overheating problem when I bought it. Needed lots of work, was worth the trouble though!

General Comments:

Terribly neglected by a barbarian, but despite all, I restored it back to its original conditions.

Happy man... do you drive a big car to help out your ego by any chance?

Congratulations to the original poster. The more 5 series e34's we can keep on the road the better!

1989 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.4 litre

Summary:

Timeless looks, performance, prestige, and value without the high cost

General Comments:

This car drives like it's still brand new.

It stops on a dime.

The car accelerates nicely above 3000 rpm, and really pulls to 6500.

This car is made for the highway; it's quiet, comfortable and looks great.

I must agree... an absolute beast of a machine. I just recently sold my 1989 535i auto with 200kms on it because the maintenance of it's electronics was getting ridiculous (parts are not cheap, not even used). Had it since new... hate new BMW 5 series design. Will recommend this vehicle to anybody. Just Make sure you find one with all service records and low mileage. Timeless beauty and sophistication is what these vehicles are all about. Great for sons car!

1989 BMW 5 Series i 2.5 gas

Summary:

Great style/performance/comfort for the money

Faults:

My gas gauge and water temperature gauge do not work when the car is cold.

General Comments:

I took the car to FL, 2500 miles in 4 days. Gas mileage was 27.5MPG with the cruise set at 77MPH.

Pick up is very good. Transmisson downshift on the automatic is very sweet. The BMW engineers knew what they were doing with that 'button' under the gas pedal.

"My gas gauge and water temperature gauge do not work when the car is cold."

I suspect corrosion or slightly loose electrical contacts at the fuse or some such. Disconnect and reconnect to see if it improves.

1989 BMW 5 Series 525i 2.5

Summary:

Be prepared to spend money, but it's worth it!

Faults:

Front suspension rattles whenever I hit a pot hole, speedbump or drive into my driveway.

Dash instruments go on and off (am told the main computer needs replacing costing $1,000).

Had the evaporator for the air conditioning replaced ($1,000), air conditioner only blows cold while the car is moving.

Headlamps go on and off (I am told this may be part of the computer problem).

Had a lower control arm replaced (part of the suspension??).

Small fluid leak.

General Comments:

I LOVE the style of the car! Looks GREAT for being 11 years old. It's the perfect size... not too big & not too small!

My sister-in-law just purchased a brand new 528i & I still like the look of mine better!

I had the same problems with lights going out, experts saying the same thing... computer. I found the problem to be the relays, just needed some WD40 on the pivot points.

I had the same problem. My lights go out randomly. I'm getting it all fixed right now though. I have 140,000 miles on mine. It's been well maintained and runs beautifully. I would rather have my 1990 525i than most any new car. And as for the pick-up, I think it is superb. I have an automatic and there is an overdrive button under the accelerator, if you know how to use it right and get accustomed to it you'll be happily surprised to see what the 5 series can do.

Light problem very easy to fix. Pull out the lighting circuit board and resolder all the connections. I mentioned my lighting problem to a experienced mechanic while getting a oil change years ago. He just pulled out the board (unplugs easily) resoldered the joints on the board and put it back in. Done! (Under a black plastic cover in the engine bay)
