1991 BMW 8 Series 850i V12

Faults:

Rear & front wheel alignment and Computer pixel's are going out slowly.

General Comments:

The early 850i cars are great if you can find one with low miles and a clean service record. The smooth V12 does this car justice for power, The car can flat out get up for a car its size and weight, It's been said to be called a poor man's Lamborghini since the price has dropped on these cars over the yrs, But make no mistake about them with the right combination of mods and the right set up it can smoke some new cars.

I have never ever heard that a BMW 850 has been called "A poor mans Lamborghini". The 8-series from BMW was in the same class as Lamborghini Diablo, Ferrari 456GT, Mercedes SL500 & 600, Jaguar XK8 & XKR. A Lamborghini is more expensive, but I don´t think that someone would buy a BMW 850 just because they can´t afford a Lamborghini. 850 is one of the most expensive cars ever built from BMW factory.

Cadillac owner.

1996 BMW 8 Series Ci V8

Faults:

The pixels in the on-board computer faded out at 40,000 miles.

The seat gears needed replacing at 55,000 miles. Also the silver seat lever cracked.

The headlights loosen slightly and need adjustment periodically.

The fuel pump went at 65,000 miles.

The tires wear out quicker than with lighter cars.

Hoses began to wear at 50,000 miles.

General Comments:

This car cleans up nicely. It is a rare, beautiful, and powerful touring car.

With the use of booster seats, I can fit my two boys in the back of this exotic coupe. I'm hard pressed to find a replacement that does this and gets me excited.

1996 BMW 8 Series 840 Ci 4.4L Gas

Faults:

Water pump needed to be replaced at 50K miles.

Brakes at 32K.

Nothing else has gone wrong.

General Comments:

Truely a fantastic car. Maintenance on the car is shocking to say the least. $250-$320 for a regular check/oil change. Anything else needing to be done, no matter how minor, usually $200.00 more to start with.

Brakes, holy crap...$1,500 to have them done by BMW. With the 840, you need to replace the rotars when replacing the pads... one word...OUCH!

BMW service, second to none.

Comfort, very nice. Driven the car on long drives a couple of times, can hardly tell you are driving.

Not a car if you have kids! Have to sell ours!

I have one, got the service check list from BMW and service it myself, costs me knob all. the car underneath is surprisingly simple and with standard tools you can pretty much take the whole car to bits.

Used mine 60,000miles and about 8 self services (more regular than required, but keeps it tip top) well under a £1000 total... try it.

Before your sell the kids, better check with your attorney. Understandable you feel that way because you can find kids anywhere - a good 8 series is more difficult :)

1995 BMW 8 Series 840 CI 4.4 liter V8

Replaced differential input shaft seal.

Replaced front seat cables that adjust the seat. Another common problem with this model.

General Comments:

1997 BMW 8 Series 840 Ci 4.4 V8

Summary:

Absolutely love it

Faults:

The windshield cracked by a flying stone chip.

Driver seat-back will not fold.

General Comments:

This car is still my favorite car of all. I own 2 BMW's (840 Ci and 330 Xi), 1 Mercedes (C230), and a Porsche (928 S4) and I still love the 840.

Everywhere I go people look at my car in admiration and sometimes actually walk up to see it up close when it is parked.

I keep the car maintained properly and it has not given me too much problems yet. I just wished that BMW would start making them again with the V12 engine with a touch of M or Motor sport.

I own a 840 BMW as well, I must admit I do love it as well, I have 7 cars and the 840 is the best of them. I can drive any where and park and not have to worry about damage, unlike my F360 in which someone left me a message on my bonnet with there key!!!. Not as fast as the F360 but now that I run nos as well it seems to keep up with the rest of them.

You had mentioned that you would like it if BMW made an M version of the 8 series. They never badged it as one, but the 850 CSI is a m werks' edition. They are rare, but absolutely brilliant when unleashed on some poor unsuspecting tarmac.

Cheers!!
