2003 BMW X5 4.4i
Summary:
A great car - fun to drive, sturdy, safe, and beautiful!
Faults:
Digital display went bad.
CV joint boots went bad.
Timing chain gasket leaked.
Struts wore out.
Water pump broke.
General Comments:
Great car on the road - handles like my BMW motorcycle! 4.4 has plenty of pep. Fast, smooth, corners beautifully, handles almost like a dream.
Gas mileage not terrible, but nothing to write home about, especially if you're a leadfoot.
The interior I think is very awkward, almost as if they tried to stretch out a 5-Series setup into an SUV - the seats don't sit right in the space, the visors are too short to cover the window when pulled to the side, and the center console and door armrest were torturous until I got used to it. Hopefully this has been improved in later models.
Overall I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with the X5 - it's a fantastic overall car. My only beef is that it's terrible off-road - it takes bumps awkwardly and very roughly (because of the sporty road suspension), the weight distribution or "stance" of the car isn't conducive to off-roading, and the suspension seems likely to wear out or break on anything beyond the occasional dirt road. Have yet to try it in snow, but my guess is that it will handle well considering its hefty weight.
My last car was a Range Rover - it was great off-road, but not so great on the highway. As I get older, I'm on the road more, so I got the X5 for more highway driving, and am very happy with it. I live out in the country, so I just take the unpaved roads slower...
The repairs are extremely expensive (parts are pricey, and my local BMW/Bugatti dealer charges $150 per hour!). I would not own this car without a bumper-to-bumper aftermarket warranty, which I thankfully have because they just paid out $4500 on the recent repairs!
The repairs so far are (in my mind) to be expected. The X5 has, so far, been very reliable. I highly recommend this car to anyone, especially if the price is right! A beautiful ride with hopefully good resale value as well.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

A lot of bmw's seem to have problems with the electric windows. The assembly seems rather fragile.
