1987 Buick Century Limited

Summary:

This car is reliable and safe

Faults:

I had to have the timing chain replaced.

The coil pack was replaced.

General Comments:

I really like my car. It is very roomy, and it feels like you're sitting on a sofa when in it.

It runs really smooth except when it idles.

Its gas mileage is not the best, but the car is older than I am, so it's understandable.

The weight of the car helps in the snow, but snowy hills and driveways are a little rough.

This car is good for teenagers; its top speed is 85 mph. This is good for me, because I know if it went faster, I would go faster.

Its heavy metal body, in my opinion, makes it safer than many newer cars.

1987 Buick Century Limited V6 3.8L

Summary:

Roomy, but crappy :(

Faults:

I first originally bought this car for $700, and had understood the car would need a tune up and the mass air flow sensor fixed.

Tune up (plugs, wires, oil, fuel filter changed).

Mass air flow sensor and air filter after that.

Car still wouldn't floor for some odd reason, and check engine would not stop flashing at me (only at night or when engine was cold).

On the night when the car died and lost compression, my heat gauge kept going up to the 3/4 mark on the gauge, and then dropping down to normal a little below 220 degrees. The car died, but started right back up (no more heating up), and the car died and wouldn't start again. The car would only turn over very weakly due to engine damage.

General Comments:

I personally thought this car was pretty comfortable and roomy, but I would like to buy another Mazda or some type of import, because you can easily put over 200,000 miles on an import.

1987 Buick Century Custom 2.5

Summary:

Strong as a bull

Faults:

Alternator replaced at 120,000.

Fuel pump replaced at 193,000.

General Comments:

I bought this car when it was 10 years old in 1997. It was the most reliable car I've ever owned, next to my Chevy Celebrity.

Other than the alternator and fuel pump, I never had to replace anything except tires, in the 5 years I owned it.

I sold it in 2002, with 296,000 miles on it, and it was still running strong. The only reason I sold it was my wife and I had our first child, and we needed something bigger.

1987 Buick Century Custom 2.5L Tech IV (Iron Duke 151)

Summary:

Great low budget cruiser

Faults:

- Replaced faulty alternator when car was purchased.

- Throttle body fuel sensor shorted out at 97K (sort of my fault)

- Replaced whorn tilt steering column (common problem on all 80's gm vehicles with tilt column)

- Placed leaky valve cover gasket at 100K.

General Comments:

- Good commuting car/cruiser.

- Decent gas mileage (26 mpg)

- Handles great in the winter and sticks to the road well in the summer.

- It's kind of a boat, but not too bad.

- Comfy and spacious interior.

- Built like a tank.

- Built with good sheet metal, so it does turn in a rust bucket.

1987 Buick Century Custom 2.5 Liter I4

Summary:

It's a well built car, that will last you a long time

Faults:

Nothing out of the average for the age of the car. Some connections loose under dash, but nothing bad. Just snapped them back together. There was a very minor steering fluid leak, but I ran some sealer though the system and it stopped. Nothing major though.

General Comments:

The car is a tank. It's a very well build car. It's 18 years old and it has 91,700 miles on it, so it has a long life a head of it. It's got a great engine in it. It's the 151 CID cast iron block aka The Iron Duke with fuel injection. It's got some low end punch to it. Really smooth driving car and it handles good. Seats are very nice.
