1988 Buick Park Avenue 3.6

Summary:

ALWAYS dependable and economical

Faults:

Door gaskets going bad resulting in road noise.

Front suspension weak - needs to be replaced.

Power window motor failed - driver's door.

Power door lock motor failed - driver's door.

General Comments:

The car has been a winner from day one. It is pleasant to drive, comfortable for long trips. Gas mileage around town averages 16 mpg; however, on the road, with AC and 75 mph, average gas mileage is 34 mpg. The engine is strong and reliable. Regular maintenance primarily only costs. Always has power when needed - such as when accelerating onto the freeway. We've driven it in all kinds of road conditions - from the heat of the desert (where we live) to cold, icy and snowy - it always performs well and with good traction.

34 MPG? Must be a typo. 24 would be great for this car.

Naw, it's that 3.6 liter V6. Gets way better gas mileage than the 3.8 liter that EVERY other 1988 Park Avenue came with!

1988 Buick Park Avenue 3.8L V6

Faults:

In the 8500 miles I've had the car only the four tires had to be replaced. for a 17 year old car the interior is really flawless.

General Comments:

Runs as sweet as the day it was purchased from the dealer. you would not believe how such an old car could run so great and smooth as silk.

1988 Buick Park Avenue 3.8 V6

Summary:

Absolutely solid car-No regrets

Faults:

Replaced plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter upon purchase. Replaced with factory AC parts.

Replaced alternator and battery at 188,000 miles.

Replaced noisy water pump at 190,000 miles. Easy 30 minute repair.

Converted A/C system to R134A at 191,000. Still blows cold.

Replaced front pads/rotors/calipers and rear shoes/hardware/wheel cylinders/drums at 195,000. Brake parts for these cars are dirt cheap and easy to replace.

Replaced front struts/strut mounts and sway bar links at 200,000 miles. Wow, what a difference!

Replaced fuel pump, fuel pump sending unit and fuel filter at 210,000 miles.

Less than $50 in parts.

Replaced brake lines from master cylinder to rear wheel cylinders due to rust. 15 Northern Michigan winters!

Oil changed at least every 3,000 miles.

Always use Valvoline and AC filter.

General Comments:

Tremendous reliability, nearly impossible to kill a 3800.

Replacement parts for these cars are very inexpensive.

440-T4 trans, while having a somewhat poor reliability record, is rock solid in my car. Shift timing and shift quality is superb.

Terrific fuel mileage, 23 city, 30 highway doing 85 with the air on.

Good power-3800 has tons of low end torque. Acceleration would be better if these cars weren't geared terribly high for fuel mileage. 2.81 axle ratio=somewhat lazy off the line. Easy to bury the speedo needle though!

3800 easily rivals Japanese engines in smoothness. I should know, I am a Toyota technician. While certainly not scientific, I can still stand a nickel on end on the intake manifold of my 3800 with it idling and it will not fall over! Cast iron block/heads/overhead valves! Who needs 4 cams!

I found this review extremely helpful. I am currently looking for a car within a $1000 to $2000 price range. I have mostly been looking at newer model Kia's and Hyundai's because of their inexpensive price, but yesterday someone told us to go look at a Buick Park Avenue that is for sale right down the block from our house. They siad they had driven the car themselves and it has a "good engine". We got there and realized it was a 1988 car with over 100,000 miles on it, and it was priced at $1500. We found it humerous and left thinking there was no way we would buy this old car with high mileage when newer ones were within our price range. Today I drove past the car again and out of curiosity I looked on line for info about it, which led me to this website. All of the reviews on this car are extremely favorable (NOT so for most Hyundai's or Kia's), and another website said that the going rate for a 1988 is between $1000-1500, so this car now seems like much less of a joke. I will be in contact with the dealer to see what we can do with the price, just wanted to express my appreciation for the information gained from this website. It is hard to find information on older cars such as this, and was refreshing how easily accessed this information was on your website.

Thank You!
