1991 Cadillac Allante Base 405

Summary:

I really like this car; it looks great and runs well

Faults:

Heater core blew under pressure, and leaked coolant all inside the passenger side floor and mat, and it pooled; a mess to clean up, no warning on it going. $590.00 to replace the heater core, and to flush and replace the coolant. Fortunately I was alone when this happened; with hot steam and coolant coming into the passenger side, someone might have gotten burned.

Other than that, the car has performed really well. I also had the brake system flushed as well, and found the fluid was quite dirty, so that was a good thing to do. I will be getting the transmission flushed as soon as the snow goes away.

I am the 3rd owner, and I do not think the last owner changed fluids very often, but did not abuse the car in any way; it still looks great. Other than the fluids, the car was in great shape. It has a new top and the interior was 7 out of 10.

General Comments:

It's a head turner here in Toronto Canada; most people have never seen one, even though it's a 1991; only 5 were sold in Canada in 1991. A base white model with burgundy interior and black roof.

We really enjoy it with the top down, and the radio or CD player going on my rock & roll oldies.

It has lot of power, and the sound from the engine or tail pipe is great.

I plan to keep the car a few years. I store it inside with a cover over the winter, and run it 1/2 an hour every two weeks.

1991 Cadillac Allante Hardtop Convertible 4.5

Summary:

I would recommend the Cadillac Allante to anyone

Faults:

Upon purchase, I serviced the brake system, replacing the front brake hoses and the ABS pump hose.

I replaced the front wheel bearings.

Typical maintenance was performed; trans was serviced.

I have had no issues with this car. It has operated perfectly. The car is comfortable and drives very well.

General Comments:

For a car of this age, I have been very fortunate. Knowing nothing of this model, I bought it on the spot. It has proven to be reliable, agile, having a contemporary appearance, being advanced in its technologies, while achieving good economy.

This car looks as good with the top down as it does with the soft top up, or even with the hard top attached.

1991 Cadillac Allante 4.5 V8

Summary:

Beautiful italian exotic to buy. one of a kind

Faults:

When you are out to buy a Allante, watch out for these areas:

1. Oil leaks. Make sure you look under the car and check there are no oil leaks. Best if the oil gasket has already been replaced oil as it's expensive to replace.

2. Check the Bose radio speakers for static (may run 50-300 a speaker) sound.

3. Check the soft top mechanism pull down motor. Don't assume it work (front and back side).

4. Coolant leaks. Watch out for rust inside the radiator.

5. ABS brake master cylinders: make sure to check this as it will cost you $1000-$3000 to replace.

6. On high mileage cars, check the steering shaft is OK. You might not pass the safety inspection as it might need replacing.

7. Check the information center lights to see any paint chips (you can only see at night when you turn your headlamop on). Some buttons go bad and you can see the back light through them.

8. Make sure you get a nice pair of tail lamps. These are very costly. $500-$800 new.

General Comments:

Very good solid engine with good torque.

A bit noisy and has a shaky ride.

No other convertible will have this much seating space, except very old cars.

Absolute head turner, yet what can I say, it's a Italian exotic.

Watch out when you buy it from auctions on the web. All the cars look nice in pictures. Make sure you send the inspector (worth an extra 100 or so) to inspect the car in and out, up and down), so you're sure it hasn't been in any accidents and and that it has no oil leaks etc. It's worthwhile. Best if you are present.

Don't trust the mileage. Look at the mileage with the condition of the interior and exterior, and check under the body for rust. Rust may indicate an odometer discrepancy.

1991 Cadillac Allante 4.5 liter

Summary:

This car is great fun and able to drive anywhere

Faults:

Required to replace ABS pump after extended car storage.

Chose to exchange all four Bose speaker due to amplifier failures.

Observing prescribed service intervals, I have had no other issues with the car.

General Comments:

Bought car from Cad dealer and have never regretted it. Repairs when made there are costly, but they are a Cadillac dealership.

Previous specialty cars owned were restored post WWII cars.

The Allante offers power, style and reliability I could not find in restored older cars or convertibles.

1991 Cadillac Allante 4.5 Liter

Summary:

Impressive value for the dollar, really turns heads!

Faults:

Fixed the following from previous owner:

Door lock/unlock switches intermittent.

Driver's window required assistance, replaced window belt.

Vanity mirror housings were cracked from sun exposure.

Bose unit had failed.

General Comments:

If you're in the market, look for a one-owner car with all maintenance records. Be sure the brake and cooling system was properly maintained; i.e. yearly fluid flush and fill.

The power of the 4.5 is very surprising. Most people look to the '93 for the power, but they miss out on the Bose system, Recaro seats, multiplex lighting and a host of other goodies that were cut in the name of cost savings. You won't be disappointed. 1991 and '92 are the best years.

Nothing can hold a candle to the sophistication of these cars, but if you leave repairs to the dealer, you may get soaked $$$. After all, we're talking about a $60,000 automobile.

Consider joining the AAG or AOA for lots of great advice and camaraderie.

This car turns heads all over town. Most folks have never seen one and have no idea what make or model it is. It's a real conversation starter.

At 150,000 miles the drive train feels fresh, and the rigidity of the body is amazing.
