1987 Cadillac DeVille 4.1 liter V8

Summary:

This car is awesome!!!

Faults:

The Service Soon light comes on every now & then, going to have it looked at, the previous owner told me it may be the oxygen sensor, but to be on the safe side, I'll have it looked at.

The axle is making a squeaking noise while driving, & clicks rapidly sometimes in turns; getting that fixed soon as well.

When I got the car, it had 229,000 kilometers on the body & just over 80,000 on the motor.

General Comments:

The car drives like a dream & turns a lot of heads.

My only real gripe is the lack of power from the 4.1 V8. At times, I say to myself "I wish it had a 4.5 V8".

It is very comfortable on road trips, with lots of room for all passengers.

Check the wire wheels, wire hubcaps; they make a lot of noise if the spokes are loose.

1987 Cadillac DeVille 4.1 ltre

Summary:

A tremendous disappointment

Faults:

Idler pulleys (several)

Water Pumps (numerous)

Alternators (several)

Cooling Fan controllers (several)

Radio fuses (constantly)

Radiator

Power Window switches

Power Window motor (1)

Door lock switches

Door lock solenoids

Outside door handle/lock (1)

General Comments:

This automobile has seemingly spent more time in the shop for very expensive repairs, than any automobile I have owned in the past 35 years.

Premature failure of systems on the car happen frequently. In one eight month period, the water pump was replaced six times by GM dealers using GM parts. Special 'pellets' must be added to the coolant due to the aluminum block being mated to conventional cast metal heads.

The electrical system, specifically warning lights and sensors, fail and give false readings for no apparent reason. The systems sometimes resemble an old pinball machine, rather than an automobile dashboard, with warning lights coming on and off at odd intervals.

Though driven gently and with care, we have had to replace alternators, idler pulleys, cooling fan motor-controllers (several), complete top overhaul at 75,000 miles, power window and door lock solenoids and switches.

A annoying and persistent vibration happens anytime the tires have more than 10,000 miles on them.

The paint is very thin, and started showing primer on the roof at 75,000 miles, tho the car has always been garaged and has always had a good coat of high quality wax on the paint.

The side windows are really too large, and allow heat to build inside the car. The huge side windows make the driver and passengers appear and feel as if they are sitting in a hole.

When all the parts are assembled and functioning, the car has an admirable ride and comfort level. But this goal is seldom achieved.

My Dad owned one for a brief period. It leaked water into the oil and you could smell the coolant out of the exhaust. He got so fed up with it he eventually got rid of it... I now have a chance to purchase one with only 64k on it. Immaculate condition and previously owned by an elderly man who took q-tip & white glove care of it. It will only be $900 US in payments. But I have a low paying job and in these times it will be a sacrifice... I only hope I don't end up with that series number out of the assembly line secretly marked "DeLemon"... I know they do exists... Living in the southwest, heat is the most common problems for these Caddy's. Overheating is all too common.

Can any one suggest anything to help these very delicate, fragile, almost glass like aluminum heads from warping under extreme heat.. On the other one, we had aux fans and a mist hose that would keep the radiator wet at all times... it did not work after two hours in august at 3pm at he international bridge from Mexico to U.S. it started fuming like a steam boat on the Mississippi... please help...
