1988 Cadillac DeVille

Summary:

I think it is a very good car

Faults:

Drivers window fell off track.

Heater stopped working.

A/C has a leak.

General Comments:

Even though the car was 19 years old when I bought it, I still did because of the shape it was in.

This car had been garaged kept its whole live, by the original owner, who I knew. It looked almost new. It had never been in an accident. The interior of the car looked like it did the day it came off the showroom floor. The trunk still had some things covered in plastic.

I had a 1999 Lincoln before the Cadillac. I had second thoughts about buying a car that was 11 years older than the one I had. But the Cadillac ran so well, I could not pass it up.

I was surprised at the performance of the car, it would run circles around my Lincoln, and on a long trip I got 25 MPG on the highway. That was a very happy surprise. My general overall mileage with city and town driving is 21MPG.

The car has well over 100,000 miles on it now and it does not burn a drop of oil at all. The only problems I have had are the driver’s window fell off the track, and the AC and heater stopped working. I fixed the heater, was a vacuum problem with one of the controls, and the AC has a very slow leak.

So far I have been happily surprised at how well this old a car runs. I have not had any or the problems that I have seen listed on this site. For my money, this was a very well built car.

1988 Cadillac DeVille Coupe V8

Summary:

Awesome, I want another one!!!

Faults:

I just purchased this vehicle after my Stratus was repo'd about two months ago.

The driver's seat is a little worn, more dirty, and the driver's side window rolls up a little slow, and when I make a hard right turn while making a U turn, it makes a grinding noise, and I was told sparks shoot up.

But other than that, oh, and just noticing a small oil leak, I have had no issues at all.

It sucks up more gas than I like, but the smooth ride, comfortable seating, and power makes up for it.

This car really hauls some ass, I work about 30 miles (all freeway) away from home, and when I get on the interstate I can bury the needle easily and this car has no issue with doing so.

I am happy I decided to not go with a car payment anymore and buy this one for 1,000; no big issues, but it's saving me almost 500 a month in car payments, and now I can put money into this baby, and it was garage kept so no rust or fading paint or anything.

I plan on having this car forever, even if it just becomes my fun second car until I have a child that will respect great beauty and I can pass it on to him or her.

1988 Cadillac DeVille 4.5L V8

Summary:

Excellent Craftsmanship - 205,000 miles!!

Faults:

- The radiator developed a small leak @ about 170,000mi due to the fact that it's made with plastic endcaps and not sold metal.

- The A/C Compressor finally failed @ about 160,000mi

- The driver side window came off track @ 180,000mi.

General Comments:

This is bar none the most reliable and comfortable car I have ever owned. It was garage kept, and passed to me from my father. It currently has 205,000 miles on it (yes, two-hundred and five thousand) and it still runs like a champ. Oil is changed regularly @ 3,000mi and only high mileage synthetic is used in it. This engine and the 4.9L that went into some of the SeVilles right before the NorthStar system came out are bulletproof. GM did an amazing job engineering and perfecting these engines. The NorthStars are blowing head gaskets (a $1400 fix...) as early as 30,000mi, but these late 80's and early 90's 'lacs are amazing pieces of machinery. I'm getting ready to drop quite a bit of $$ into mine to fully restore the interior and get a nice paint job.
