2001 Cadillac DeVille DHS Northstar

Summary:

It is a beautiful machine in most all ways with the exception of the vibration noted above

Faults:

From the time I purchased this car, I have experienced a vibration at speeds above 65 MPH. The local dealer has tried a number of times to fix it with limited results. I have also taken it to two independent tire shops with similar results. The only noticeable improvement was when the dealership found and replaced a faulty tie rod end, during a Periodic Motor Vehicle Safety inspection that is required in Virginia.

2001 Cadillac DeVille 4.6 V8 (Northstar)

Summary:

Absolutely Beautiful-- totally love it!

Faults:

So far, nothing at all!!!

General Comments:

The Deville is awesome so far-- I originally wanted an STS, but the more I looked at the car next to it on the car lot (the Deville, of course) the more I realized that I need to get it.

Plenty of power-- I often surprise passengers when I "stand on the pedal" and they experience the pick-up on this car-- it almost seems endless which is amazing for this big of a car.

By far, the most comfortable seats I've sat in for an automobile. Interior is well laid out, but operating the digital readouts can be a little confusing at first, but work well after sitting down with the manual for a few minutes.

Styling is very classy inside and out, I have the pearl-white exterior, light tan leather interior, and chrome upgrade stock wheels. I always get complements on the car wherever I go.

I heard about the 2 common complaints about this car, (oil consumption and tire vibration) I've driven the car over 90 MPH and had no tire vibration whatsoever. I do believe that this car will burn oil, I found the oil level when initially buying it to be a little low, but since it doesn't leak any I don't see a big deal in adding 1/2-1 quart of oil a month-- just a small price to pay to drive this beautiful automobile.

I probably would not recommend anyone to buy a Deville brand new, though-- this car is 4 years old and I bought it for less than half the sticker price...

Faults:

I have vibration at speeds between 65 and 70 mph. Nothing so far helps the problem, including changing all four tires and rebalancing them, also adjusting air pressure up and down repeatedly.

2001 Cadillac DeVille 4.6

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Nothing so far. Maybe tires needed. Michelins should be the only choice used.

General Comments:

Trying to offer some info on the tire vibration issue. On the Caddys, Michelins should be the one and only choice. As for my used 01, it also had some of the vibration at 65-70. It has Michelins on it, but they will have to be replaced by fall.

The current Michelins have been rebalanced. They are at about 1/3 useful life left.

As for vibrations of tires. Several issues pop up. One is the balancing equipment. This equipment is designed to be calibrated every day. It's rare that you can find a shop that actually does this. There happens to be one shop in Nashville I have found that actually does this. Its very rare to find a shop that actually calibrates the machine... If they never calibrate, the result is they can never really balance a tire.

Installing new tires. Tires can be very easily damaged during install. What... they're paying these guys what, 6-7 dollars per hour? If a tire bead is overstretched, it will never ride right. The damage will be invisible.

Michelin X ones are a stiffer tire. They certainly transmit more road feel into the car. But... great tires... they last forever with minimal fuss.

Northstars and oil consumption. These cars are not being driven hard enough. A Northstar engineer has suggested that the car should be basically floored at 75mph. Hard. I have done this myself a dozen times and 70% of the vibration issue has gone away. I think what you might be feeling is drivetrain 'chuggle', rather then a tire issue. Whats up? Maybe it gets the flow of the injectors up and going again whatever. I myself typically drive like there is an egg under the pedal. Long life drivetrain right? I guess on the newer engine you have to clear them out.

Anyways some suggestions... more info is available at this Cadillac website -

Good luck

Logan.

I have had these EXACT same issues on my 01 since about 35K and have been regularly beating my dealer about the head and chest to resolve them. I tend to drive pretty hard, lots of highway passing and need new tires. At least I know I'm not the only one. Will give your ideas a try. Thanks. DT.

I've been through 45 States in a truck. This guy is dreaming up stories about tires.

Any name brand tire will do the trick. The only big difference is the higher end stiff will last longer and look better. Vibration can show up in many different ways.

It would be nice if all we had to do to fix it was buy nice tires, but unfortunately it don't work that way.
